I was rectangularly formed at the top, but round at the bottom. I was eight inches both in depth and circumference, and normally a foot from top to bottom. I was usually fashioned from alder. What was I and what was I used for?

Both I suppose. It is heavily associated with a particular kind of drink, is Teutonic in origin although popularised in Ireland, and was traditionally used in a particular 30 day celebration....
It's a mether cup used for drinking mead, dating back to the 10th century! I must admit, I'd never heard of these!
