I was rectangularly formed at the top, but round at the bottom. I was eight inches both in depth and circumference, and normally a foot from top to bottom. I was usually fashioned from alder. What was I and what was I used for?

"Normally a foot from top to bottom" the man says. So I'm thinking that means it is a foot to something, rather than a measurement.

It is heavily associated with a particular kind of drink, is Teutonic in origin although popularised in Ireland, and was traditionally used in a particular 30 day celebration....

That's only half the answer I was looking for - yes it was used for drinking mead, but on what occasion?

 

The only description I can find is that it was a "communal drinking vessel!"

 

One more clue - something to do with marriage customs...
