They had their armed forces day over here the other day, the were shunted off to some wee backwater like Ards if I remember.

    Good enough for them.

I've got pacifistic optimism - one of the reasons Russia is pussyfooting around Ukraine is that very powerful Russians have economic interests all over Europe which are being ****ed by EU sanctions. As we continue to globalise countries will become ever more interdependent and we'll have a smaller use for armies (over say, strong police forces).

So aye, a demilitarised future is a perfectly reasonable ambition.

So who will be first to dismantle their Armed Forces Mick? The Swiss, The Italians, South Korea, Iran, Russia?

Dream on, it's never going to happen, it's like Communism, a great idea in principle but fundamentally flawed because it relies upon good will from all parties, something that humanity has never achieved.

Yeah, course it is. Because 1914-18 was the "war to end all wars",was it not? And that went well.

There's about 105 armed conflicts being fought all round the world right now, and you think the enlightened self interest of the business community will put a stop to war?

Yes I am an optimist, we're slowly moving to a state of non-violence - 40 years ago there were public hangings, now you'd get arrested for kicking your dog. We've never lived in a more peaceful time - and it's getting better every year.

    War is a business

We will see more and more PMCs used in conflicts around the world so that Brit Mercs will be shooting at other Brit Mercs like it's some sort of B Action Movie

    Democracy bitches

So anyway, these birds on the crane. Is there some sort of competition being arranged, with prizes for shooting them off it using crossbows, or 19th Century muskets?

    What they said:

What the Money is actually being spent on:

[h=3]A NATION REMEMBERS: WHAT IS PLANNED TO MARK THE CENTENARY[/h]David Cameron unveiled a four-year £50million programme to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the start of the First World War. It includes:

    • A £35million refurbishment of the World War One galleries at the Imperial War Museum, to open in 2014. It is part-funded by £5million from the Treasury raised fines imposed on banks for financial misconduct
    • A series of national commemorative events marking the start of the First World War in 2014, the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 2016 and Armistice Day in 2018
    • Two students and a teacher form every secondary school in England to visit the battlefields and report back to other pupils as part of a £5.3million project to encourage research into local links with the frontline
    • Heritage Lottery Fund grants of £15million for community education projects including £6million announced today
    • HMS Caroline, the last surviving warship from the conflict, will have a secure future in Belfast thanks to a grant of up to £1million from the National Heritage Memorial Fund

So in actual fact this money is not being spent on "on one ceremony" as these people are suggesting

It's probably 55 million that Her Majesty's Armed Forces plundered from some brown people so unless they're protesting to return it I'll remain indifferent

"Children from every state secondary school"

"A £35million refurbishment of the World War One galleries at the Imperial War Museum"

    = Commuinty Education

Or is teaching people about their history not education? <laugh>
