So look at our main London rivals: One is owned by a Russian gangster and funded by ill-gotten gains, another by a couple of pornographers who have somehow managed to get their stadium funded by the rest of us, and the third had to bribe its way to move ground and then to promotion. You must have a different definition of 'honourable' from the rest of us.

To be fair, Danny Boy makes a lot of money for Uncle Joe, and gives himself a nice pay rise out of the Spud fans pockets, so I reckon those two are quite happy with the situation. As long as the Spuds are finishing somewhere around the top 6 and they have a valuable player to flog to the highest bidder, Uncle Joe and Danny are raking it in. Job done <ok>

    The facts:
Arsenal's promotion was the only one in history where position in the League was not the only issue
Arsenal's Chairman at the time was subsequently banned for life from football for corruption.
At the league AGM the Liverpool Chairman made a speech recommending Arsenal's promotional ahead of Spurs thanks to the former's longer spell in the League although Preston North End & Wolves, who both finished ahead of Arsenal, had been members of the league longer than Arsenal,

The only explanation I can think of is that money changed hands. What would your view be?

Probably because Arsenal had spent 20 years being loyal to that league (which eventually became the Division 1 as it was) whilst other teams flirted with other leagues in competition and ultimately seen as a threat. Also because Norris was a brilliant negotiator and more successful lobbyist. The only evidence of corruption at the time was match fixing between Liverpool and Man Utd, which led to the situation arising after the war.

Spurs weren't in contention for promotion as they had finished bottom of the league and were therefore rightly relegated.

Norris was banned from football for taking the equivalent of bungs, but that was years later and had nothing to do with Arsenal's promotion to the top league. There is, unless you can provide evidence, no proof to support your claim that Arsenal 'bribed' their way to promotion.

Untrue - there was a vote and Spurs were second behind Arsenal. If Arsenal had finished 3rd in Div 2 your argument would make sense. It would have been wholly reasonable to promote the third team at the expense of the bottom team in Division 1. No honourable team would even have 'applied' to be promoted in these circumstances.

What is untrue ? I know there was a vote. 18 people voted for Arsenal as opposed to 8 who voted for Spurs.

Spurs finished bottom of the league before it disbanded due to the war, so they were rightly relegated.

Where is your evidence to back up your claim that Arsenal 'bribed' their way to promotion ?

Arsenal were put forward by two clubs that were caught match fixing and there was no other reason to promote them.
They finished 6th (later corrected to 5th) and had spent less time in the league than some of the teams above them.
The league table for the top-flight was clearly unreliable too, due to the aforementioned match fixing.
Your chairman was later banned from football forever for other cheating.

    That enough for you?

I totally agree. The two teams that were responsible for their promotion should, too.
I'm sure that you'd be fully behind that, right? One of them's Man Utd. The other's Liverpool.

... this is scandalous - outrageous <grr> ... Arsenal, Spurs, Man United and Liverpool should all be demoted to the Scottish second division immediately ... if it was good enough for Rangers etc <grr>
