Funny thing about preseason, the very early fixtures seem a bit pointless. However if it's the second to last game before the season starts and you've just been tonked 7 nil by Runcorn I reckon you'd be a bit worried.

well.... klopp just packs them in.

the early ones are really just kids getting a few kicks and really just a bit of variety for training regime.

the tour is just a cash game.

the last 2 usually are just finishing off prep. this year they squeezed in one more at home finally which was long long over due.

the club has been all around the place rewarding fans who buy crap online but since the main stand was done we have not had a home preseason game til this week.

Players maybe start to gel, getting some playing time so the first time they are out together isn't the first fixture of the season.

Preseason has seen Sturridge connecting well with both Keita and Shaqiri. They may not get on the pitch together much, if at all but it's shown there seems to be a natural connection between them which is a good sign. We've seen Jones handle himself remarkably well in a first team situation. And ............ Ings and Lallana are done.

As for predicting how players will perform based on preseason, you can't even do that during a season from one game to the next <laugh>

    1. Alisson. Decent but needs to get his head down.
    2. clyne. fit but not sure he will start
    3. vvd will be no better or worse than last year. no partnership was developed with anyone
    4. Robertson. warming up barely.
    6. fabinho. can Mark my words right now this lad is not mobile and can chase back.
    7. Keita. classy. different sort of cm totally for us compared to what we have been seeing for years.
    8. windy. still committed. looking for his place.
    9. Milner. really fit. won't play more than 50% of games though.
    10. salah. slow start I think. one one goal a game ;)
    11. sturridge. it won't last. sorry but you can tell the legs are not quite there.
    12. shaqiri. go to sub already. I think he sees this as his last chance at the big time. looks hilarious on the pitch.

and this is only for jb. zanjinho won't read this far and will comment I said I wouldn't post this at all ;)

    1. Not been tested at all. Great distribution.
    2. TAA was the understudy, now Clyne is the understudy.
    3. With new goalkeeper behind him I say he will be better this term
    4. Expecting same superb performance as last year.
    5. Oh you missed out 5 ...
    6. Only seen 20 minutes of him - no opinion yet.
    7. Is the PL ready for him ...
    8. Plays better further forward.
    9. Agree with what you say.
    10. Can he be even better - I think so.
    11. Legs are gone but great positional awareness and great option off the bench.
    12. Another great option off the bench, won't see him getting pushed off the ball too often.

Probably because needed extra time to build stand and then they were relaying turf for a few years weren’t they?

I’m also not fully convinced the RB position is set in stone. Firstly, it’s not uncommon for a young player like TAA to have tougher second season after a breakout season. Secondly, Clyne is amazing. Before the injury, he was progressing toward becoming one of the better fullbacks in the league. It’ll be interesting to watch.

Defensively TAA still has a way to go. Clyne is a more solid option, even though TAA had some very good defensively displays (notably the CL games). But going forward Clyne is very limited and TAA is a much better player. His delivery is better than anyone else in the club already for a start and he has a bit more pace than Clyne to go past players.

I think it’s a nice mix between the two and can see them rotating depending on fixtures with Clyne playing when we need a more solid defence and TAA when we have more of the ball and need to attack stubborn defensive teams.

hell, could even play them both with TAA playing a Milner type role in midfield and drifting wide

Agree with all, although I'd say Robertson has an equally good delivery.

Another thing TAA has, he's very coachable, not all players are .... cough ..Moreno .... cough. I think Clyne is either at his peak or just past it, TAA will get better and better.

I do wonder if TAA still may move into midfield. He looks to have to much to his game to be restricted to RB.
