I query the "fact" that the only reason the old firm are big is because of bigotry. It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.

Bollocks. I know Rangers initially had some catholics but you soon enough became the most bigoted club probably in the world. As well you know it but then you are even unaware of what happened with Rangers in the 1980's so you are going to be completely clueless prior to that.

Rangers was, not now, a Protestant Instution and appealed to bigots who were intolerant of other denominations and that is a FACT.

At least Graeme Peeness had the guts to sign a catholic, admittedly just to piss off Celtic but he did try and change the inherent blinkered vision of the club.

Athletico Bilbao only use players from the Basque country and have done throughout their history.

Is that not bigotry?

Rangers were founded by bigotry against celtc & catholics even though we had fielded a catholic before celtc even existed <laugh>

Aberdeen were founded so that the locals stopped tampering with the wildlife. Attendances went up initially but soon dwindled as they couldn't keep away from the soft delicate wooly touch of their first love.

So why are celtic so big then? bigotry too?

Stop talking about Celtic.

We're talking Rangers at the moment and how you're fans are glory hunters who disappeared like sna affa dyke when the going got tough.

In fact therefore you are just one of the small SPL teams as well. You always managed to fill Hampden in your Cup Final days out though when there was a sniff of glory, unfounded right enough. Exactly as you are portraying Hibs and Hearts.

Funny that eh?

Sorry to have touched a nerve but it proves I'm right.

I'm not having a go, Im just stating facts.

Erm Frunkie, re-read my post where I stated you had catholics initially.

That quickly changed though.

I can talk about celtic if I want because I mentioned them in my original point. (you haven't given a reason why they are so big btw) Glasgow teams are big because we are not tight fisted miserable ****s like yourself. We spend money to watch our team. You rely on the old firm to survive! How sad is that?

Initially Rangers were a big club based on sectarian bigotry and hence had a large following which brought success. Glasgow is rife and and has been for centuries with intolerance and bigotry. In 1980 Rangers suddenly became **** and supporters deserted them in their droves, hence the reference to crowds of 5000 on occasions but you were perhaps not alive then to know about this. If it wasn't for the huge amounts of money ploughed into the club from 1986 onwards there would have been a fair chance you might still be ****. The three dominant teams were Dundee Utd, Aberdeen and Celtic up till money rescued Rangers. Even with vast amounts of money you still had to resort to cheating and skullduggery to continue that success.

Anything else you would like to know sonny?

still getting all your "facts" from harry - you know he gets all his info from made up stuff on celtic fans bigoted websites.

Truth hurts. Well said ER.

we were set up 16 years before celtic but what ever makes yer wee brain happy

Celtic were founded to help support the impoverished Irish immigrant population of Glasgow in the late 19th Century. At the time I think it was Queen of the South that was the most successful club in Scotland (though I might be mistaken). Celtic always enjoyed a large support and even had a good relationship with Rangers. In fact at some point in the 1890s Celtic loaned the Rangers goalkeeper for the first half dozen games of the season because we didn't have anyone to fill that position. The goalie managed to keep all clean sheets and help Celtic win the championship trophy that season.

It was sometime between 1910 and 1020 that rangers adopted a sectarian signing policy and positioned themselves as an anti-catholic club. This was when the club was owned by a Northern Irish protestant ship builder and it created a focal point for those in the most populated city in Scotland to take a stance against what they saw as rising Catholicism.

The term 'Old Firm' was first coined by a Glaswegian newspaper who used it to describe how between them, Celtic and Rangers divvied up over 70% of the support of all Scottish Clubs, and that phrase stuck.
