To be fair I think the reason Michael Owen was offered so much by Newcastle was because he was a genuine superstar and a former ballon d'or winner.

Think they were still trying to play 'We're big boys' signing name recognition players.

As I recall, he was not happy to move after one season to anyone but us, but Madrid were amazed that Newcastle would pay that price (literally nobody else would - it was clear then that his best years were behind him) and Newcastle wanted it so badly they offered him more than he was on in Madrid. A bit like Ford this summer - I posted back in June that he was so desperate to come back that he was prepared to go on the wages he was on before he signed that new contract with us in May of 2017, and the Liverpool Board would okay it by just writing off the instalments that Barca still owe us - but Klopp said no. That said, if the stories of him being offered to Spurs for £30m less are true, you can't blame him.

They had a thing about having a well established top talent CF, at any cost.

When I stop laughing for a minute I actually feel for Utd supporters a bit. The outraged sense of entitlement isn't too dissimilar to that of many of our own fans down the years.
Extended success is a double-edged sword in that it fosters the belief that it's your right to be at the top - but they, like us, have to earn it every time.
The football they've had to endure over the last few years is a pale shadow of what they were used to, and it hurts.

They have my sympathies - for a moment - and then I go back to laughing.
