I don't think there was anything wrong with what he said. His problem is that he's a simple, straightforward man in many ways, and his naivete means he often doesn't anticipate that something he says will be twisted and used against him by people more cynical than he.
how much a year is he paid? He should have the brains to know by now what to say on a critical topic that will attract massive attention.
Journo: "What do you think would be the way to rectify this?" Klopp: " A replay would be best, but that won't happen." Headline : "KLOPP DEMANDS REPLAY!" How much he's paid is irrelevant, his problem is thinking others are as straight as he is. He's paid to manage a football team - if he were a better diplomat it would be nice, but he isn't. I'd rather we had a football manager in charge than a politician whose every word is measured for effect. For me, the fools in all of this are those who don't see that his meaning has been twisted beyond recognition for the cynical ends of others.
it's very relevant. he has to know "it won't happen" will never be the headline. he's paid enough to know thst and not get himself in trouble. he should have said genuine reform as his answer and gone on to say what form that might take. those people you call fools are no fools at all. the media got their clicks and headlines and bylines while all klopp got was laughed at. the people who didn't want to hear him were only ever going to need any excuse to ignore the thing and thats what they did.
Those that laughed at him can go and **** themselves - I know the difference between someone who says what he honestly thinks and those who twist the words or intentions of others for their own purposes. And I know which of those people I have some respect for. It's not the journalists, and anyone joining in with the general mockery is just playing into their hands.
By the way - the fools I mentioned are not the hacks who exploit everything for gain - but those who actually believe the things they write.
But that's your answer, not his. He could have said any number of things like - scrap VAR .... improve VAR... disband PGMOL .... make sure that referee never referees us again ... give us our point ..... But he didn't say any of those things because in his opinion, the best solution would be a replay. He also knew that would never happen and said so immediately, showing that he wasn't seriously requesting one. People also seem to forget that English isn't his first language and while he is fluent, he struggles many times to find the right word or phrase while also seeking clarification when he doesn't understand a word or phrase. He isn't "paid enough" to be able to understand nuance in a foreign language.
Although it has improved tremendously over the years, his command of English still isn't that great tbh. His delivery can't keep up with the thoughts he's trying to express. If you read a transcript of something he says it's often repetitive and vague. This isn't a criticism by any means - fully grasping the linguistic and cultural nuances of a foreign language is something not many master. Even those of us who grew up steeped in its subtlety often make mistakes or misunderstand one another. My complaint is more about the purpose of sports journalists - rather than striving to understand what someone is trying to say and report it honestly they're looking to find something to sensationalise and cause mischief. None of us should be pandering to their malicious efforts to vilify people over a verbal slip or an inadequately expressed opinion. Of course the blatant tribalism in football makes their job easier because everyone just loves to jump on a rival. It would be nice if Klopp never put a foot wrong in his interviews and never gave anyone cause for deliberate misinterpretation, but it isn't going to happen.
Klopp is paid 15million a year. he doesn't get to stand up in a public setting wearing LFC "uniform" and answer as LFC manager and then just give his "personal opinion" He has to know walking into the press conference for the next game that he has to make a skilled answer and have it prepped. No excuses for foreign languages, no excuses at all. Prep what needs to be said and stick to it. 15mil a year? He handed them their headline and an excuse to do nothing about it.
Sports journalists do a lot of trap setting which catches foreign players and managers alike (and sometimes the non-foreign slow thinkers). They know exactly what they are doing. Klopp says all the time - I will give my answer and then you go and write something else. He's very aware of it and still gives his honest reply. Tbh whichever way he replies, the usual suspects will still overreact.
I accept this is all your opinion and you're free to hold it. I couldn't disagree more. I'm glad he gives his personal opinion and doesn't toe some kind of party line. He sets himself apart by being authentic. If you think that's naive, that's maybe you following group thought.
authentically disadvantaged. Authentically under pressure from Refs Authentically under pressure from FA it was a stupid comment and a foot in his mouth. He actually sets himself apart by results, nice guy losers are still losers. What he does to back his players sets him apart. what he does in the transfer market sets him apart. This is why he's has longer term success compared to some others who lose their players or make bad errors that can't be fixed. Making a stupid statement about var didn't help himself nor LFC one iota. Further we actually have PGMOL and certain refs lined up to get one over on us
Are you trying to say that before the 'replay' interview we were treated very fairly by referees and VAR and definitely didn't have any with an agenda against us? There are lots of aspects to Klopp that set him apart coming from his core as a decent human being. The one aspect I mentioned was related to his approach at press conferences. The ones you highlight can be added to the list.
There wasn't anything wrong with what he said but it was always going to get twisted, attract unwanted focus and create distraction from the main issue.
I see the Premier League have swooped on Man City with their usual rapid response. The hearing for the 115 breaches of FFP is set to start some time in Autumn 2024 with a decision expected some time in late 2025. Odd they could move a lot faster in Everton's case!!
