Controversial opinion, but I'm far less opposed to letting things run the course with Omicron than I was the other variants.

Hospitalization risk and severe complications from all I've heard are far lower with this variant. The real danger all along with COVID was what we saw in Italy early on where hospitals were overloaded with patients meaning people, not just with COVID but other diseases were not getting adequate health attention.

If this variant isn't causing a huge spike in hospitalizations or death, it might be better for the general public to let it spread. Let the idiots who refused to get vaccinated get infected with this mild strain to get some immunity so that they're less likely to catch the next "delta" variant that comes along.

Not saying deliberately spread it. Masks, distancing, work from home when possible are all still good... But I don't think there is much point completely locking things down again and allowing some limited controlled spread might not be the end of the world with this variant.

Being vaccinated doesn't stop you from getting infected, or transmitting to others <whistle>

Agree on this variant though, the woman who discovered it has said its a mild one

No, but it greatly reduces the risk of needing hospitalizaton and Omicron isn't causing much hospitalization anyway.

Ah so you have fallen for the propaganda too.

How do you know yet how many hospitalizations omincrom will cause?

Itll be another 3-4 weeks before we really know here as it becomes dominant.

Boosters are not an excuse to act like a cock into. The smallest bit of respect for others means you make and socially distance as they could get sick even if you dont.

On the other hand you could be like boris after having covid and having a pizza party bender while people could only meet 1 other outside.

What an utter utter rotten set of scum.

For me booster is for you but masking and all that inconvenience is for others. How any moron can not look after no 1 is beyond me.

actually, it was the South African chief medical officer who said that it was a statistical fact but hey, why let facts get in the way of reality <whistle>

Yeah cos the south African medical officer's population demographics match ours.

    You.cant know till.you know.

We already know a lot more about transmissability and this is showing up as much much worse than delta and faster to grow as well.

So let's see how we fare eh?

Saying its mild just encourages boris levels of partying and mixing

the South Africans also told us that it spreads fast. Are their scientists not as good as ours then? They also had a vaccination rate as low as 26%.

I’m not saying don’t be careful but I smell a big pile of BS somewhere….this doesn’t smell right - so I probably got it <laugh>

We are very grateful to the South African authorities for detecting and reporting this. But the demographics are very different here in age and health so we need to build the evidence to definitively say what's what.

We have so far gotten a handle on the infectiveness and it's scared the poo out of authorities. The R0 rate is not yet fully defined. Delta was 5-8. Measles is 18 which is the top transmitter we know. Omnicron is right up there not maybe at 10 or 12.

We are hopeful that the race to boost holds the tide frankly and only time will tell. It could yet evade vaccines and then we are at square 1 worst case.

    A quote from guardian

If Omicron is spreading so quickly, some wondered, perhaps it will at least be milder. But experts say this expectation has no scientific basis. “Put simply, this has been one of the most baffling misinformation myths peddled during the pandemic,” said Prof Alan McNally, director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham. “There is almost no evidence of any human pathogenic virus evolving towards reduced virulence.”

Hopefully it's the vaccines that are making this less severe and hopefully we can see new boosters developed ASAP.

75% of the SA population is unvaccinated. None of it makes sense to me.

Lower average age, heading to their summer so less gatherings indoors etc and less population density.

They really aren't a good case study for how this will develop, luckily we stepped up for the world.

All if these things all come to play.

The only real indications we have are number of infections and that leads to number of hospitalisations and that leads to deaths.
