Yeah they're bound to get there eventually but think it'd take a couple of seasons personally at the very least. Remember the anti competive FFP rules mean they won't be able to do what City did so quickly with the likes of Robinho etc There's no chance Mbappe is choosing Newcastle over Real Madrid at this point no matter what the wage. Didn't the Saudis say last year that the initial investment plan was a couple hundred mil over 4/5 years? Hardly mind blowing.
The only thing that will put the brakes on the coming juggernaut is the FFP. But how effective have they been? Have they been effective on PSG and City spending vast amounts? yes, they may have have said they’ll spend around 200m over 5 years? But PSG and City spend more than that in one year! Does any in their right mind believe that the Saudi Kingdom will allow their club to languish in mid table whilst the likes of City (and UAE) and PSG (Qatar) lord it over them? Does any one sane think that they will accept that loss of face?
City were before FFP though and by the time it came in they were in CL and had the income/sponsorship associated with it. Completely different for Newcastle. Like I say I'm sure they'll get there eventually but they absolutely aren't going to be signing the best players in the world in the next two Windows. Another team competing can only be good for the league anyway.
I did say 2 to 3 years. But if the experiences of City and PSG are anything to go by, Newcastle is in for a period of dominance all things being equal. We with the likes of FSG will have to helplessly observe that rise. We need to start praying that Klopp stays with us for the next 5 years. Pay him double what he earns nowadays.
PL FFP will stop a City ever happening again, what do you think has happened to our spending this season & why? For all the crying about City they’ve now created a club that has the 6th largest turnover in football. Newcastle will have a go but it’s not going to be a City type thing, even the consortium buying it have always said that, £250m investment into the club over 5 years was that they committed to I’m pleased for the Geordies as they’ve been lumbered with Ashley for 14 years, and they’ll now employ a better manager, buy better players and improve, but the idea that they’re about to take over domestic & European football is for the birds.
Also, even city didn’t suddenly go from mid table to prem winners in a year or two. Remember the thai owners started it at city spending big money to get higher up before they were then brought abs started spending even more money. The best European players weren’t going to city right away. Yes money helps but you still need the prestige. It’s a gradual thing. First of they should start buying the best players from the mid table clubs, players like ings who are solid prem players and can get you up to regular top half before pushing onto europe.
Well no, initially you suggested they might go for the likes of Conte/Pogba this season which is what I disagreed with.
