The PL was formed out of greed. They wanted more so cut themselves off from the rest. It's usually forgotten about which is why I smile when I read some of the comments about football today being about money. The PL was literally formed to grab more. This is just an updated version. I seriously doubt the two protagonists are expecting the proposals to be voted in. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas. It will be the start of a long conversation about change.
I find it funny that fans are in open revolt over this plan, as are the financially stable clubs (mainly lower prem teams and the higher Championship clubs) yet alot of the lower EFL clubs are backing the proposal. I personally am neither for or against it. Fact is without some plan many of the EFL clubs are going to go bust in a matter of months. So whilst we accuse the Americans of a power grab, remember the PL (as are all those clubs openly against it) are pretty much willing to do nothing at the moment and will probably sit around doing nothing while the league system collapses and many clubs are reduced to amatuer status. So it maybe a power grab, but at least its an idea. Perhaps its an idea that can be worked on?
It's an idea/plan that has been purposely released early with the full knowledge it would cause uproar. Now a discussion will begin with other party's brought in and a "better" plan made and passed. The top six (United and Liverpool will still get what they want but others will think they have made concessions and will go along with it.
Not a chance that’s happening imo. There is absolutely no need to alter the current status quo in the PL in terms of voting rights or anything else for that matter, in relation to the cash shortfall the EFL currently faces. The correlation is bogus and this proposal will hit the bin.
I don't think you can say clubs are willing to do nothing because they don't want to give all the power to a 6 club cartel. Helping the EFL doesn't automatically equate to changing voting rights and TV revenue splits etc. I agree though that we will see reforms of some sort come from this and some things will be adopted. The voting rights thing ain't gonna happen though.
I think currently there are far bigger things to worry about in the country atm but if the so called big six wish to go off and form some sort of European franchised super league - best of british to them. Its not going to take a lot to make me stop watching now tbh, As for the power grab, totally understand their timing, totally get what they seem to be doing Completely and utterly disagree with it. However it is not something to beat any club or fans over - this **** storm was created by the clubs back at the start of the prem, people warned of these kind of doomsday scenarios. Everyone wanted to be on the gravy train. No point moaning now, defo a time to vote with feet (or tv switch/knob)
You want taxpayers subsidising Championship wages? The point of the proposal is to reduce the gap between the lowest PL side and the highest Championship side, i.e. the massive cliff edge that drives Championship clubs to routinely operate on massive losses in the hope of winning the promotion lottery and qualifying for parachute payments.
No. As the £250m black hole in the EFL has been caused solely by lack of match goers. The Championship clubs who choose to operate at a loss due to their owners ambition are covered by their owners cash, that’s how it works. Below the Championship clubs need matchday revenue to survive and there isn’t any. Not complicated really. Yeah more than halving the lower half clubs TV revenue and virtually guaranteeing promoted teams are relegated again by insisting they hold back £25m of that halved revenue in their first season is really levelling up the game. ‘Altruism’ by the Big 6 using other clubs money whilst demanding complete control of the game as the price for giving other clubs cash away, yet here’s you defending it.
If you truly believe that the PL as a competition is what attracts global audiences, and not the individual big clubs, why would you be concerned? Surely every team in the PL will be able to negotiate big tv deals independently or demand a greater slice?
So removing over 20% of the games from the TV package whilst keeping the prize money for the top sides exactly the same whilst simultaneously halving the TV cash for the lower sides is perfectly fine by you then? Also remove 20% of the games & you reduce the revenue for the entire league from the broadcasters and ergo the EFL share. Such altruism. That’s a strawman btw, as the overall value of the PL is driven by the competition itself removing a chunk of games for each club to sell independently is obvs going to favour the bigger clubs.
I've already stated that the voting issue is a problem, and it should at least require all top 9 to veto. Otherwise a lot of the proposals make sense. Do you think the massive pay drop from PL to Championship is a problem, or that it's fine? If you accept it is a problem then how can it be reduced without paying the lower placed teams less? The current system where teams get to 35 points and head to the beach is broken. A more merit-based pay keeps things competitive and reduces the revenue cliff to the Championship. If you accept that a smoother transition in revenue would be better then the details can be worked out to keep it as fair as possible. For example, the distribution can be the same as current for the top 10, and then tail off for the lower half of the PL. The money not being given to the bottom PL clubs can be given to the top Championship clubs. So the top PL clubs aren't getting more, the midtable PL clubs have something to play for, and the top Championship clubs get more money. Win. Win. Win.
Thats not what I meant by doing nothing. More that no other PL club has shown any signs of trying to find a way to solve the issue and neither have the PL themselves. They've just sort of sat around waiting for something to happen without actually doing anything and in that time some clubs (before Covid) have already fallen by the way side. Frankly the FA, PL and EFL should have already come up with an answer as the fragile state of the EFL clubs has been happening for a number of years before this.
