Ronaldo raced Bolt over 40 metres if I remember right, Ronaldo's acceleration was nullified by Bolt's block start, they were even for around 30m then Bolt pulled away. Ronaldo and Walcott are probably about the same over 40 metres.

The reason he's been clocked at such a speed is because he's a defender, you're right. He was running without the ball. Antonio Valencia will blitz that if he starts a game at RB for United, and needs to get back for a counter attack. With the ball, you can't run that fast.

    How've you worked that out?

I was making a point of speed being a subjective measurement and easily manipulated. Over the distances Mo runs he would be far far quicker. Likewise if Bolt took him on over 200 or 100m he would be quicker.

They were meant to race over a halfway distance.

Fastest in the league (for what is actually the most useful in football) currently has to be Sterling. He's dynamite over short distance (when he's not too tired <whistle>)

Mo would defo beat him over a long distance, they reckoned about 640 Metres or something before Farah took over IIRC.

Speed is measured in metres per second though mate, Bolt has measured 12.4 m/s and Mo Farah hasn't ever covered 12.4 m/s without mechanical assistance.

Yeah when he's not in bed nursing his sore legs.

I'd have thought it'd be somebody of the Moussa Sissoko ilk, or Andy Carroll at full gallop <laugh>

That'd be like watching Cheltenham when one of the jockeys has fallen off and the nag still carries on!

<laugh> Exactly what I was thinking!

Then I suddenly pictured Sissoko riding Carroll like a horse, while grappling his mane/pony tail <yikes>

    Speed is measured in m/s.

Otherwise the land speed record would just be about which car can do the most mpg.

**** knows mate, who you thinking of? Ronaldo's phsyique has been dubbed as the ultimate footballer's physique, so I doubt you have to look back more than 20 years or so to find your answer. Phil Babb was doing some knots when he whacked that post...

I'd have a stab in the dark at Gareth Bale mate.

The charity event that the lame horses are allowed to compete in.

You don't get a block start on a football pitch.

It's a poor experiment. If I was a Journo I wouldn't put my name to it and I'm a stat man.

You probably drive at 40mph on the motorway mate <ok>

If you're a law abiding citizen, your speed would be 70mph maximum which would make you travel faster than anybody who drives at 69mph anywhere else in the world at that particular time.

How funny would it be if Phil Jagielka scored at the weekend and unveiled a tee shirt saying "fastest in the premier league - as confirmed by the Daily Mail"? To be hinest i doubt even he thinks it's something to crow about

There was no journo it was just a video.

It's a poor experiment under any circumstances, a domestic cat would out-sprint Walcott over 3 metres.

It's the same theory when a 250cc motorbike gets away from the lights quicker than a 5 litre Mercedes.

Acceleration can be downsized so many times until you're talking about insects being faster than an F-22, ultimately that's why people look at top speed.
