I wouldn’t have Powell back as manager for 2 reasons -

    1. His style of football is poor - certainly at Championship level which we aspire to.

    2. More bogus sentimentality than an episode of First Dates.

He got us promoted, which is what we aspire too.

He also had the rug pulled beaneath him once promoted.

Style of football wasn’t great in the championship, but we played some beautiful stuff in league one.

Agree with the first two points, and admire the understatement in the first part of your third one.

The first season wasn’t bad, but it was a shock compared to what we saw in league one. The way CP got the team to adapt after a wobble was good management, something that’s often looked over to be fair.

Main point was that the players would have done anything for him. The side was just devoid of that little bit extra that was needed.

No doubting that Powell spent the Jenkinson money very well & built a very good side in
L1. He deserves plaudits for that. When the Spivs turned the taps off he really struggled - his last three months as Charlton Manager were grim and he deserved the sack IMo when it came - that let down at Sheffield Utd in the Cup Q/F really was inexcusable

The decision was the right one for both sides - they never truly wanted/trusted CP and he deserved better than what they would offer.

Sheffield was a **** day but think too much emphasis is put on it. I was more bothered by the league position.

he was backed in league one and succeeded. he was never backed in the championship so i dont think it's fair to judge him on his football in it. he didnt want it, but had no choice but to field under strength sides all the time; and just when he thought that would change, he got bongo the clown in goal and nego at full back.

i'd take powell back without thinking. i'd also take being in L2 than having this lot own us.

When you take over 5,000 fans away to Sheffield in an FA Cup Q/F to play a lower league team, it will stick in the memory because Powell was abject that day. What stuck in the craw was the way he slyly sought to pass the buck for his defeat - remember his insinuations about RD interference in team selection undermining the players, followed by Dyer backing him up, Ultimately he sucked off his own tunnel jumps & sentimentality a little too often IMO. I wouldn't ever want him back at Charlton, and it is noticeable how he has struggled to work since.

I’d take Powell at his word if he says he was forced in to doing things the RD way.

Powell over RD in regards to anything. Except electronics. Maybe.

I am not of the Sir Chris Powell brigade, although I am a big fan of him.

Once these idiots are history we should bring him back as manager to galvanise the support. Although that depends on how long we have to suffer this vermin.

If the Lib Dems can give Mr Vince Cable a K (for god knows what?) then why can't Charlton fans give a K to Sir Chris Powell?

His style of football got worse when RD arrived and dumped all those sh1t network players on him, rid him of his better performers, and then quizzed him as to why his well scouted stars weren't playing.<laugh>

One positive about CP - He falls into the rare group of Charlton manager's who have actually improved the team by quite some margin.

I wouldn't want him back though, because I always think we could do better.

His strength was his man-management. But he also used to drive us mad by his refusal to use the subs until near the end, and bringing on extra CB's. He didn't get the best out of Yann, using him as a target man. But, he could spot a player, and I believe if he hadn't been undermined by the Regime we'd still be in the Championship.
