If we're going to vote for our luckiest player then Hamer should be in with a shout. Wiggins for me. Will be shocked if Solly doesn't win it though.
A really hard call, it's great when we have so many players who've played well, as opposed to the last few years when people like Holland and Semedo won without being that sensational. I'm struggling to choose between 6 players, any of the back 4, Jackson (his goals and set pieces - our corners used to be terrible) or Kermagant.
It says a lot that the players with the vast majority of votes are our defensive foursome. For years the weakest link in our team has been our defence, we collectively cringe at the names of some of our defenders of recent years (Hudson...McCarthy...Francis...Butterfield...Llera...Halford...Youga in the Championship...Doherty though he's still here....need I go on?), but now we have without doubt the strongest defence in the league and the one which has conceded the third least amount of goals in all four leagues. I'm with Ponders in that I find Jackson far too anonymous. I feel the same about Taylor at times, but I'm convinced that's my own tactical naivety which has biased such a view, as the team seem to drop in form whenever Jackson is out of it (and luckily Taylor has been an ever present).
If BWP hadn't gone 8 games without scoring - he would have been right up there with the rest. As for JJ - he hasn't done enough to merit POTY, but he's been absolutely vital for us and rather him in the team than not.
I'd vote for both Wiggins and Solly if I could, but Wiggins just edged it for me because of his attacking play, which tends to be better than Solly's. However, I think/hope Solly will, deservedly, get POTY.
(Hudson...McCarthy...Francis...Butterfield...Llera ...Halford...Youga in the Championship...Doherty though he's still here....need I go on?), But a lot of those players have been quite good elsewhere, and many of those players are regularly playing at a higher level than us Hudson, extended his contract at Cardiff (high up Championship) McCarthy - regular in Palace team that stayed up when we went down Halford - regular for clubs in the Championship, at Pompey currently, played a few games for Wolves in the PL Butterfield - plenty of Championship experience Youga - was excellent for us before injury Doherty - was a decent defender, but past it now. In my opinion, a good defence is about coaching and teamwork. George Graham created a brilliant defence which was definitely better than the sum of its parts. Taylor and Morrison are a great pairing, remember how Dann and Johnson were great for Birmingham, and how they slumped after Dann was injured.
Interesting that the two players who looked to be our most "exciting" signings pre-season haven't got a vote between them. No reflection on them. Just shows what an array of talent we have compared with previous seasons. BWP might have won it any other year and could still be in with a chance if he scores a hatful of goals in the second half of the season. Much as fans value the defenders and Kermorgant, most managers will tell you that prolific goalscorers are the hardest players to find and then dovetail into the team, which is why they usually command the highest transfer prices. Green has done OK but is far too inconsistent to be considered.
I was just thinking the same. He's six goals away from being "the striker we've been waiting five years for" (20 goals a season) and no votes.
I really believe that BWP will find his scoring-boots again this season. If he does hit 20+ goals this term, I will still vote Chirs Solly as my POTY. Not because I don't appreciate the goalscorer's role, but more due to the fact that Solly has pulled this season out of the bag and surprised just about everyone. BWP hitting 20+ goals in League One is a reasonable expectation. Solly's brilliance wasn't.
I went for Hollands. Great range of passing, tough tackler, not afraid to shoot. Solly, Wiggins, Morrison, Taylor, BWP are all perfectly good candidates too IMO. Solly will probably win it because he is Mr Charlton out of our current first XI.
The same could be said of Kermorgant whose reputation after the Leicester penalty debacle saw him without a club. That he has come in to contribute so much to our season and rebuild a career that had been damaged says much about the player. That is why he got my vote.
Like most people, a real tough choice - any of the back 4 - in actual fact, can i vote for the whole back 4 ?? I've gone for Matty Taylor - maybe because of his recent performances, but i'm sure it will change by time we need to vote.
I wanted to vote for the entire back four too but Morrison just typifies for me the drastic change in this team from previous years.
Good shout there, SVC. Kermit has done brilliantly for us since arriving. I am sure Paul Hayes detests him, though!
Solly for me mr 100 per cent a real traditional charlton type player the type i`ve been brought up on.
