Just noticed that P'bro have transfer listed 4 players over breach of club discipline. Including Emile Sinclair and Tyrone Barnett. Just wondered with the spare cash that we have laying about (jarvis, gazzaniga, bertrand etc) that we could fund a loan deal for either. As for me, this would be the final piece of the jigshaw of the team as i do believe our strikeforce is our weakness when you consider that deon burton is getting on at 35, birchall is returning from a serious long term injury and Kedwell (minus the pens) doesnt contribute many goals. Thoughts ?

I am sure MA ( & Hess ) is constantly looking at the situation - about all positions in the team. At the moment we are + 20, from goals scored by nearly everyone in the squad. ( which really should be more than good enough to gain promotion without the need for strengthening.)
It appears that our style of play will continue to promote the sharing of goals. We are to enter a period, where on paper, the opposition will be harder to crack. If we have a problem in getting the necessary goals in November & December, I would expect MA & Scally to act swiftly in January. If we continue as we are it might be more prudent to wait until the end of the season - to assess what quality we want ( in L1. )

we are scoring goals all over the pitch, but with a top class striker we could score even more. Yes, we have scored 32 in 17 but that doesnt mean we cant be improved. teams can always improve (even barca) and if we had a better striker then we would be sitting here with at least another 2 points. as a good striker would have scored from 4 yards out rather than hit the crossbar as kedwell did against cheltenham. sorry but i just do not rate kedwell atall. yes he works hard, but so did gary mulligan. At the end of the day the guy just doesnt know how to score (aside from 12 yards out) , would be interesting to see his overall scoring rate since he joined us minus the pens.
Major you make a good point about the club needing to constantly approve but I am not sure what sure that loan signings are the way forward. You may have your doubts over Kedwell but he is doing a job for us at this level (as part of the team) and this is reflected in how many games he has started for the club this season, Allen won't accept anything less than total commitment and isn't afraid to leave anyone out if they aren't performing. So if we are looking to improve the squad we need to look long term, with permanant signings rather than short term loan deals
i agree that short term loans arent the way forward, but if we got a loanee in and he grabbed us 5-6 goals till jan it would make help make us a more attractive proposition to join in january (if it looks like we are well on our way to promotion)
Surely being 5 points clear (9 clear of the playoffs) at his stage of the season, plus beating two L1 teams in cup competitions shows that we are "well on the way to promotion". You assume that we will hit a poor run of form at some point and the others will close the gap, you may be right but we don't know at this stage. However I don't see the point of dipping into the koffers for a loanee just in case as it will reduce the spending power in Janurary or next season

I believe that to be wrong SirKeefy. You might want to word that to say that we have not lost a league game this season when Kedwell has started. Yes, both our loses against Rochdale and Torquay were when Keds did not start. However, we beat Port Vale away 2-0 when he did not start, we scored both goals in the first half before he came on in the second.
majorclarkkent you are annoying me !!!! you are clueless !!! do you not think that we are scoring from all over the park partly or mainly because the hold up play of kedwell and burton are league 1 quality. Their brains to distribute the ball correctly is better than we have had for along time making the most of are pure quality midfield that we have. Kedwells defensive qualitys are invaluable, he wins headers from corners and closes players down constantly resulting in the best defence in the league
so sort it out
Anyone who thinks Kedwell is league 1 quality is living in cloud cuckoo land. MA is not a big fan of Kedwell and frankly if he was that good why hasnt a league 1 team come in for him? Thankfully I think we've got enough quality in the rest of the squad to get enough goals this season. Kedwell can score a penalty, perhaps sub him on like they do in American Football!! he doesnt really contribute other than that, clearly needs to lose weight as well.
jesus some people really are simple. Just because we have 37 points from 17 games it doesnt make us perfect. As i said in an above post, improvements are always possible. And by the way you can prove anything with statistics. do you know that in the last 3 seasons barca have a better record without messi in their team than with him in their team .... does that mean they should drop him ? of course not, sometimes statistics can be misleading. Yes kedwells a gills fan, and yes he tries hard but he's also not very good and is incapable of scoring 15+ from open play. How many goals has he scored from open play this season ?? 2 or 3 perhaps ? Not overly convincing for someone who plays in a team that are 5 points clear at the top.

1. Can you elaborate on your comment re Messi ? I would find it difficult to believe your claim - given that Messi scored 82 goals last season for club & country.
2. MA has said ( more than once ) that we defend as a team and attack as a team. We need for Kedwell to do his bit in defence - which he often does. We needed Weston to support in stopping McGlashan when we played Cheltenham. We need Whelpdale to join in the attacks etc etc. I don't care if none of our players score 82 goals this season - as long as the required goals are scored by the team. And as for Kedwell ( or any other player ) - the minute their 'contribution' ( goals or otherwise ) is not enough - I would expect MA to drop them.
3. My previous post in this thread suggested that we're doing more than alright at the moment. I'm sure MA & Hess & Scally are continually considering their options. MA will not hesitate to change / improve the squad if necessary.
4. I said the current squad ( whatever formation/ players used should be good enough to obtain promotion - therefore I don't believe that we need to buy / loan players for the rest of the current season ( barring injury etc )
5. ( with point No.4 in mind ) - It wouldn't be a great surprise if Scally & Co are not ( qiuetly ) looking to next season - when, hopefully we'll be in L1. We probably have healthy funds from transfers/ appearance money - which, at this moment does not need to be 'wasted' on unnecessary transfers / loans.

Kedwell may not feature in any plans of the management team next August, as we start our quest on attaining promotion to the Championship ! - but at the moment we are in L2 and it's going well. Many interesting and differing points of view being put across in this thread. All of which have truth in them which is nice to see.
I do see where Major is coming from and believe there is nothing wrong with looking to strengthen the squad be it in the short term or the long. Success will only be achieved with constant and continual improvement. Saying that though the team have done and are continuing to do fantastically well this season but the threat of replacement is a real possibility to all footballers and this will hopefully reduce the chance of complacency as the season continues. Way way way above my hopes and expectations. As far as Kedwell is concerned I do believe that he brings so much to the team that his lack of goals is made up for by how he brings others into play and what is created by just his presence on the pitch. He brings a balance to the side in a way. I certainly feel we are a better team with him in the squad than without him.

Re Messi, its a true statistic. the reason being that they rest him from time to time in the much easier games which are easier to win and obviously they play messi in all the big games (el classicos, Champions league games in the latter stages). The point is that you can prove anything with statistics. Which can make people like Kedwell look like a good player
True but you don't need to be league 1 quality to be effective in league 2. Let be fai whatever Allen is doing with the players at his disposal appears to be working fine. Do we need to be looking at improving the squad, of course, but good L1 strikers come at a significant cost so I would prefer the management to take their time and get the right players in rather than splashing the cash on short term loan deals when the squad is holding its own.
