I'm not so sure- Ox was valued at around £3.5m when Arsenal signed him on trasnfermarkt, so the price they paid is pretty par for the course.

I agree though, we shouldn't be spending this on a player who will take a year or two to fully develop- that can wait until we're secure in the prem.

Redmond has played a season of Championship football, Oxlade Chamberlain was League 1 at same age. I don't see how that fits? or works out?
To me he looks like he has masses of potential.

But yeah depends on his current ability and whether he can fight for a place in the team this season. Hughton will know better than anyone.

Transfermarkt is a highly regarded company that assesses player values taking into account a huge array of different factors- it's the sort of company that clubs contract when they go out and buy a player, to give them an idea of the size of bid they should be putting in, it doesn't just take into account the league.

I don't know what Ox did to get such a high value, but they will have taken lots of different factors into account. I've judged a few of the Norwich transfers and a few of the premier league transfers and it's very accurate. For example- Jay Rodriguez is valued at around £1.5m, so buying him would cost between 3-4x his value, which would work out at around £6m. If Southampton pay £7m, they're paying a little over the odds, but not surprising given that Burnley don't really want/need to sell. By contrast, Jordan Rhodes is valued at £3.1m, so he should be costing between £9 and £12m, which is about right for the rumours.

Yeah, there are some very surprising valuations, but they're independent and they must know something we don't, otherwise we wouldn't see the rumoured transfer fees bandying around that we do!

Just browsing a few sites and was quite impressed by a few names, upon further research.

What do you guys think?

1) John Guidetti, scored 20 goals in 23 appearances, while on loan to Feyenoord, who finished runners-up in the Dutch League. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Guidetti. He will definitely be loaned out this season, as Man City have a host of strikers ahead in the pecking order. That is a tough league and to score 20 goals in a season while just 20 in such strong company is quite special. He would probably cost too much too buy outright, but season-loan would be a good choice, with Man City paying anything over (if he earns above our wage cap).

2) Danny Guthrie. Played 92 games for Newcastle, was signed for £2.5m, now available as a free agent. Seemed to be a good player, in the enforcer role. "Guthrie was an out of favour player with Newcastle after the signing of Cheick Tioté. The consistent form of Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan also kept the 24 year old on the bench throughout much of the season". Let's be honest, Tiote and Barton (pre-fall out and QPR-merc) would have kept anyone else in that situation. It would be interesting to hear Newcastle fans' opinions. Quite frankly, we have all discussed season-long on how we need another DM player in the Johnson-mould, Fox just isn't suited for that role, and to pick him up on a free would be a bargain. 3) Gunter (RB). Transfer value probably at £2.5m-£4m. (Reason age & 133 appearances for Forest)

4) Chambers (CB) - Option if No.5 doesn't materialize.

5) Curtis Davies (CB). If Chris Hughton rate him highly, then he is good enough for Premier League football, simple. He was also in the Championship team of the year. Would add much needed steel to our defence, and be a great foil for both Ayala and R.Bennett. £3-4m transfer fee, perhaps added attraction is to follow Hughton and of course, Premier League football.

So, I have tried to think outside of the box, away from the usual suspects, Rhodes, Rodriguez, Snodgrass, Naughton, Phillips, Ince, etc.

If Holt stays, getting this Guidetti chap for a season would be worth a shout, if it doesn't work out, we can always send him back. We would solve the DM problem. We would bolster the CB position, with an arguably better replacement to Whitbread. And, we would solve Naughton's absence at RB.

Then of course, you could get a wide player (Snodgrass, £2.5m), another RB (Naughton, £4.5m, he will be sold for more later, so you would definitely recoup this for those of you who are balking at the fee) and I think that would be a good transfer window for us.

Estimated cost £14m. Solves the problem areas, and is within our transfer budget.

Guthrie is not really a DM, however, he is talented enough to fill that role. He played around the same amount of games as Tiote last season and did just as well. If he was happy being back up, I'm sure Padrew would of loved to keep him.

He also filled Cabaye's boots a few time, he can pass, shoot and is great with a dead ball. Central midfield allrounder.

Can we please sell Simeon Jackson?

Ok, he can run, but once he's got the ball my head is almost invariably in my hands.

Bjorn Sigurdarson is a similar player, just as quick, except far younger and (i think) scores more goals. I want him (and I told McNally so at the end of the season)

I like Jackson personally. Sometimes his touch and finishing isn't perfect, but if it was he'd be phenomenal. The fact is he is rapid and his movement's incredible- with him on the pitch there always seems to be space in the final third because he pulls defences all over the place. I think he's still quite young and inexperienced, given another couple of years at this level and we may see him really develop.

That Dutch defence looked absymal, especially Van de Wiel, no idea why Chelsea want to sign him! Van Bommel is slower than Barry, and it is soley his fault for that goal conceeded, he failed to close the oncoming midfielder or make any serious effort at stopping him.

Only good players: Sneijder, Robben (both created plenty of chances), just a shame that RVP couldn't hit a barn door.

Thing that struck me was how knackered the players all looked, even after 70 minutes, must be incredibly humid.
