Is that how we measure success now? By the millions in revenue? How about 12th because we had another decent season, kept our sensible structure, played some good stuff when we could? I know I'm out of step but what is it next? Get rid of Delia and bring in a foreign potentate who has made his money because he treats his own people, particularly women, like ****?
Now you're being naughty redruth, we have debated our dislike of this method ad nauseum! <smackedbottomemoticon>
Calm down, dear, I only just found it, (Gandy beat me) and having relevance to the post being commented on, it's worth pointing out in case people have not seen it. Don't shoot the messenger !
redruth, its not about the money as far as us fans are concerned but without it, our club would probably never be able to stay in the premier league, certainly not long term. we probably wouldn't ever reach it again. i love the way our club is run - for me we have the right balance in a league full of dosh. but anyone suggesting they want the club to move forward also needs to realise that we can't move forward in terms of becoming self-sufficient (which was the grand 7-year plan's end goal) without premier league cash and bucket loads of it. i will happily watch my club even if they were bottom of the football league but i'd much rather watch them in a big stadium against the best teams and staying there to sample it every season. we are NEVER going to win the league - it is impossible. it will never, ever happen. but we could finish 5th or 6th. we could win a cup. we could be a comfortable top flight side for years and years. we can't hope to do any of those things on a consistent basis without investing in many areas both on and off the pitch and the only way a club like ours can do all that initially is through this dosh. if we ever got a new investor, i'd be very sceptical and probably dead against it. i wouldn't be keen but because they offer a shot at 'glory', many would snatch that chance.
The second one. They spent 7 years in the Premier League, and their stadium (if you can even call it that) and training facilities are laughable.
Thanks for taking the hit, cromer! I do get what redruth is saying, I mostly feel that way myself. I still remember a post on the old official NC forum after we lost to Bury in the first round of the FA cup, which basically said, so what, we're best out of it so we can concentrate on promotion. Those poor souls who made that round trip to Lancashire on a cold Tuesday January evening didn't quite see it that way at the time. Looking at those VAST sums of revenue though, it's hard not to have your head swayed to the reality of how it works, for better or for the worst, these days.
I agree 100%. When plotting a course for survival in this division, clubs like Norwich don't factor in points against Citeh, Manure, Arsenal or Chelski. If we do get points, it's a bonus. 20 years ago, under Mike Walker when we finished third, everyone could - and did, take points off everyone else. We did the double over Chelsea quite comfortably in 1992 Many of us remember - and would love a return to, days like those. But sadly, because of the dollar bill, those days are gone forever. That doesn't stop us wanting to be the best we can possibly be, though, and if Sky money is going to give us a helping hand to achieve that, we'd be stupid not to accept it.
I agree with why you are saying. I am really enjoying this debate, I really am. I am probably more of a chancer at heart than many on here. That doesn't mean I want to see the club ruined by silly spending or rash back room decisions. Of course the club is still in a state of flux. To be fair, we have yet another new manager. It only seems 5 minutes ago when Lambert joined. But I am a believer in opportunity and momentum, and it just feels as though not only have we lost a wee bit of momentum, we have lost a wee bit of ambition as well. I'm certain we will stay up and I really do hope you are all correct and we will move on next season. I don't think the Prem will ever allow any club to stand still or its curtains for them. And that is why I will always look to take the chance of winning games rather than settling for draws. I would always have Wes in my side for instance. Still, a cracking debate. There is no moaning at the moment. Just some of us commenting. Its like going to the cinema. If its a crap film, you wouldn't tell your mstes it was brilliant would you. If we play brilliant next match I will be one of the first to say so.
Who are all these people who "see the mythical pot of gold as our saviour"? I don't actually see many of them on here. But I do see a lot of people who think it is in our best interest to avoid relegation this season. You are right, and I have posted to this effect several times earlier in the season, that any extra money tends to go to the players and their agents in wages, and inflates transfer fees. But that is beside the point. If we are relegated we will have less money than if we stay up, irrespective of whether it makes us richer relative to other Premier League clubs. Furthermore, we will be that much more attractive to Premier League standard players due to our no longer having to prove we are not a one season aberration at this level. Everyone will see that we are building a future for ourselves in the Premier League. I also agree with you that some posters on here are unrealistic about the quality of player we are likely to attract in the summer. The motto will have to be "slowly but surely", not "now we can buy the quality to get us into Europe".
obviously i don't know, but i'd guess the main reason hughton was appointed (apart from being one of the best managers we could get and better defensively than lambert, something we required) was that he offers more stability at management level. lambert was one of our longest serving managers of the last twenty years(!) but we can't claim those three years, albeit successful, weren't also turbulent behind the scenes. with hughton i suspect we've appointed a manager who can stay at the helm for the next five or six years, even if we go down, and offer a much more stable leadership than we've had, probably since the days of worthy. stability can only be a good thing for a club like ourselves. there'll be a long term plan in place with regards transfers and where the club will want to be. i still think we're having a good season although results have been a tad sporadic. i can't tell if we've been consistent or inconsistent!
Hi! Long time lurker, did consider signing up a few weeks a go until all the animosity came along but yarco's post is interesting and I wanted to respond. I can see where you're coming from yarco. £50mill for Norwich and other teams doesn't sound like it's improving the club too much but as has been said it helps us when competing with the lower leagues, keeping the club stable, getting us better players and improving the academy. We, as fans, may not like it but its the way football is going. Considering where we were only a few years a go £50mill is a lot of money. It will help secure the club's future! Also, with more money the club can attract better (and hotter ) players!
If you've been watching a while you may well have spotted gorlestongirl and Yellows who are both lady posters so you don't need to feel alone, and we blokes shout and swear a lot but we're big softies really!
I really do wish this academy takes off but I just can't see us having the vision or the time in the top flight to pull it off. I'd sooner the money goes into making the ground bigger and increasing the European scouting network.
Yes, I did notice. It encouraged me to join. But I'm slightly more football obsessed than my dad or brother. I'm also not very lady-like at Carrow Road!
