WHILE growing up on Tyneside watching Newcastle United, Danny Graham dreamed of running out at St James’ Park in a black and white No.9 jersey that commands mythical status in a football-mad city.

Today he will get to fulfil part of that dream – Graham will play on what he must regard as hallowed turf, but the shirt will be that of Swansea City, and the number will be 10.

And, though Graham’s formative years were spent watching Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer as they became heroes among the Geordie faithful, nostalgia will be way down his list of priorities when he crosses the white line.

“Scoring the winner there would be right up there,” said Graham, his game-sealing second against Fulham last week being his fifth since becoming a Swan in a £3.5m move from Watford in the summer.

“Obviously things like debuts and first goals are all very special, but to go up against your boyhood team and scoring in front of all your family and friends would make it one of the best. Especially because we know what winning away from home would mean for us.

“But it will be special because I grew up watching people like Alan Shearer and Les Ferdinand wear the No.9 shirt.

“When you’re in the Premier League every game is one you look forward to but I was a die-hard fan, I’d go every week with my dad or stepdad and mates, most of them who will be in the home end again even with me playing for the away side.

“Like any Geordie lad of my age, Shearer was my idol and, of course, you knew how huge a deal the No.9 shirt was and you all dreamed of wearing it.

“There was great memories for me there, but come three o’clock all that goes out of the window.”

“It’s a special day but it’s about doing the business for my club and I’d love to score. If selected of course.”

SunderPit. Like it or not, this is more likely to happen than not and were just going to have to live with it when it does.

The player will be coming into a pretty hostile environment, having not just declared his love for the filth which would be bad enough, but also a distinct dislike of us as well.

If he pulls it off then fair play but unlike almost all new signings that normally create a lift for the new club and their fans, he will be operating under a massive cloud for many. Not all of course but certainly not a minority either.

Good luck with that one if he doesn't turn it on from day one.

If he doesnt have those attributes from day one we will smell it a mile away and his life up here will be absolute ****, so he better be 100% certain he does.
