Don't think this has been mentioned yet, but for people who care: The early rounds of the FA Youth Cup were drawn today, we were drawn at home to "Portsmouth or Barton Rovers or Stevenage". So if Pompey shake out of all of that as the winners, we'll play them at home (presumably St Mary's) a week or two before Christmas.
Our academy has a good record against you's lot in recent years. Most recently our U 17's beat your's with the very familiar scoreline of 4-1. Bring it on.
I remember that game. We rested our team for England duty and played our under 10s. A tight game though.
Of course you did. Don't underestimate the players in our academy. As I said, they've beaten yours on a few occasions in recent years. It will be a good match if/when we play. Watch out for Tarbuck, He's scoring for fun this year.
Poor choice of wording on my part. To clear things up, Bradley Tarbuck. Scoring plenty of goals this season.
I know you wouldn't want Saints to be a blueprint for you, but if you can identify and give good young players a chance in the lower leagues then they can help drag you up the divisions and at a low cost. I hope the trust put the majority of their investment in long term projects like the academy program and not on wages.
Way ahead of ya on that part. Training grounds and academy investment has already been looked at. Paying off remaining debt is top priority at the mo. As it stands our wages count for less than 40% of turnover.
That's more like it. Steve Claridge made a very good point a couple of weeks back. He said that Pompey went into the Premier League, consumed several hundred million while there, and came back out exactly the same club as they had gone in. Not a jot of real investment and not a brick in infrastructure improvement. All the money was squandered. That has to change and it's good to see that Portsmouth FC are doing so.
There's been more investment in infrastructure in the almost 7 months since we took over, than in the 7 years we were in the prem and bringing in hundreds of millions of £'s in some form. That goes a long way to showing how poorly the club was run.
If the youngsters do play each other I hope the game is played and attended in a manner that befits a civilized attitude; showing an example to those 'old guard' who still spit bile when the sides meet at a more senior level!
Excuse me, this forum is for Champions League clubs only. Go chat to some Aldershot fans or something.
