Strange decision to replay the game. I thought referees decisions were final? That is what Sepp Blatter told us after the Thierry Henry handball goal. It appears that referee decisions are NOT FINAL. Strange indeed.

It does set a precedent, although I guess in this specific instance, the decision of the ref wasn't an error in reading the game, it was an error in their knowing and applying the rules. They saw exactly what actually happened, and made the wrong call. And with 18 seconds to go and a penalty, you can't say that the outcome of the game wasn't affected.

Much as it pains me, Derry's red against Utd probably didn't affect the outcome (or at least you can't say it did) and the ref was correctly applying the rules, he just didn't see the dive.

Now it's done. England DID score the retaken penalty, meaning a 2-2 draw alongside the 3-1 defeat of Switzerland earlier in the evening means that England now top their group and look likely to qualify for the finals.

Bloody right!

That penalty taker was under unimaginable pressure having had to wait so long to take it and knowing how important it was.
Fair play to her for sticking it away.
