I think we could get away with 3 players (might suit Ashley more): a CB/LB and since Maiga can play on the wing and we look like signing him, a CM.

We'll not get Marvin Martin on Ashley's budget, he's destined for bigger things. But I was saying since we "need" 5 players, we could get away with 3 versatile ones:

ST/RW (Maiga)
CB/LB (Ridgewell?/Pieters?)
CM (????)
 
GK: Krul, Elliot, Harper, Soderberg. Forster will be sold. Verdict - solid in this position.
RB: Simpson & R. Taylor - could do with another but not essential at this moment in time.
LB: Santon - need a young left back.
CB: Taylor, Colo, Williamson, Kadar and a couple of youngsters. Verdict - someone versatile and experienced to come in.
RW: Obertan and Marveaux. Verdict - ok.
LW: Jonas & Ferguson
CM: Tiote, Cabaye, Guthrie, Gosling and a couple of youngsters. Verdict - ok.
AM: Ben Arfa, Sammy and Vuckic. Verdict - ok.
ST: Ba, Best, Shola. Verdict - striker needed.

These are short term comments. I've excluded the likes of Perch, Lovenkrands, Ranger and Smith who'll be gone sooner or later. There are also some great young players I've not added to the current list as they're not ready for the first team (but will be soon).

So we need: Striker, LB, CB in the short term. That will give us a very impressive squad. With time (e.g. after the next two transfer windows) we can improve other areas.

I would think we will bring in maybe a Lb and ST in january but the players i would get would be -

Pieters 6m - Move Santon to RB
Cristie -1m Young cover on the cheap, one for the furture
Hoilett - free - on a free this summer
Martin 10m - maybe one for next summer, our big signing to beef up our Cm/Cam competition
Maiga/De Jong 7/10m - both quick and would play well with ba

As for a striker for the future... Sameobi can fulfil the legacy Shola left. We need a striker now to play with Ba. Moussa Sow I rate highly.
LB and CB are other priorities. As we are trying to get two players for every position
