Shameful celebrations, one could be forgiven for thinking some on here would rather have joined in with Plymouth, Luton, and Cardiff's wake. :emoticon-0138-think

I get the detractors views as it was a big slice of relief, but part of that relief for me was borne out of frustration at not getting over the line much sooner, as we've seen plenty to suggest that we were good enough to do so. Unfortunately though, the League is so tightly contested that nothing is a given, so in that context it feels like it IS worth celebrating, as I don't think relegation was a given for any team in there. Just look at the the way some teams shot up, and down, the League.

I suspect Derby and Stoke fans also thought they should have gotten over the line much sooner as well - but the League Table doesn't lie and after 45 games we weren't safe even if there was "plenty to suggest" we should have been. Seen lots of "too good to go down" teams get relegated over the years.

I'm not sure what point you're making there, but to clarify, I'm referring to our position after 46 games, and the number of results against top 10 teams as an indication of our potential.

My memories of watching the Sheffield Utd game would have been far less enjoyable if it hadn't contributed to our survival at the end of the season.

The point is that while there was apparently "plenty to suggest" we should be okay, (wins at Sheff Utd and Sunlan) there was at least equally as much to suggest we wouldn't be ( absolute sh!te performances against Luton (H) Derby (H) and Cardiff (A). Good job West Brom were up for the game yesterday

It's an absolute mercy that West Brom were still up for it. Maybe a good job they were at home too. Luton going into it on the back of 3 wins on the trot too (yeah, I know, 3 game form doesn't count :emoticon-0105-wink:).
I expected Preston to lose, going into a game on the back of 4 straight loses, against Bristol who were at home and who would be wanting 3 points to ensure play offs.
    Funny old game.
    And incredibly fine margins.

Always had a soft spot for Pompey (and Plymouth) fans, despite being as far Sth as you can find football they always travel with good numbers and always make plenty of noise - fair play to 'em.

We weren't the only team to struggle against Luton and Derby towards the end of the season. Both teams were on an upward trajectory that had put us in peril in the first place.

Both were bang average and we couldn't take advantage.

That's a fair assessment. Our form really went out of the window.

We did score for our nearest oppos a few times at the wrong end of the season which forced us into dire straits .
