I don't get why Fabregas has said anything at all.
It seems to me that he's just trying to justify his move to Barcelona, which would have been more easily done by just saying that we wanted to join the best team around and go home.

Would it have killed him to have just said that the club could still compete and that they have a very good manager?

I have to agree. Why go to all the bother if you're not trying to make a point? A simple I wanted to go home to Barca - they wanted me back, would have done, and end of story.
