More competitition may mean games are more crucial in terms of a slip up could be capitalised upon by teams competing, so yes more people may come out to watch celtic v hearts etc in that case, maybe not, who knows. but it's not automatically as a result of having no rangers. Even when rangers back the interest in many run of the mill games will be minimal. We (celtic and rangers) need more teams to step up to compete regularly. Last proper season in Scotland IMO was when hearts split the old firm and we had 3 serious contenders for the title and euro spots etc
Huns laughing because their death had the side effect of making the SPL less interesting... congratulations on your success?
Apart from the fact that attendances have been declining since 2008. Scottish football has always been uncompetitive so nothing has really changed.
I don't find any of it funny in the slightest actually. It's a shame to see the game I love die. Eric mentions 2008 it's been going on for much longer than that. I won't start one of my why don't kids play football rants again, but in 2013 football (like music and reading) is no longer a particularly relevant form of entertainment for the weans. Why go to the games when you can play them in your living room?
When folk cant afford to take kids to games then its hard to get them interested in it. Clubs should follow the airlines example in that its better to get a £1 for a seat than let it go for nothing.
I agree with you about the money thing Eric, but I think smaller clubs like Motherwell and Partick Thistle have tried that one with varying degrees of success. For me the problem goes deeper the majority of kids are no longer interested in participating in sporting activities. My mates a PE teacher in a Glasgow secondary. He says the amount of time they have to waste with non-participants is incredible. At least a third of his kids turn up without kit as a means to avoid it. He says this is not confined to his school either it's citywide. When I was a kid I spent all my spare time playing football which in turn led me to want to go to watch it being played. It's not like that anymore. As interest in the game declines so will attendance figures.
i was pretty similar moses. i used to pester my dad to take me to leeds every home game, when we didn't go there i used to go watch my local team and play in the proper nets after the game. football meant the world. I also think the amount of games that are on tv it is much easier for a dad to fob a kid off with "why don't we watch man u v newcastle on tv instead" fans are also being priced out of football it is an absolute disgrace. when Ken bates took over at leeds he advertised some tickets for 15 quid. a mate of mine tried to get some, when he asked for 2 adult and 2 kids he was told he could only get the special price if the tickets were all separate. he had to buy 4 at 25 each, already 40 quid more than he was expecting, he was then told there was a 5 quid per ticket booking fee. so what he thought was going to cost him 60 quid was in fact 120 (cool story i know). he vowed never to go again. now ken bates is an absolute **** but i doubt he is the only chairman doing things like this. lawell reduced the season tickets by 100 this year, i seriously doubt he will do the same again next season, I would guess rangers season tickets are also going up given that you are desperate for cash. the whole thing is a busted flush anyway if ever you get the chance to drink fat yak pal ale I cannot recommend it highly enough...
Thats probably down to the weather. I was the school sports champion but even I refused to do P.E in the winter because they always made us go outside. Wasn't that I didn't like it but it was just to ****ing cold to run about. I'm all for summer football in Scotland.
Scottish football is a busted flush...regardless of whether rangers make it into the premiership... One horse race becomes a two horse raise ...if rangers can afford to mount a challenge. It's dead...has been for years...as mick said, best period was when hearts made a challenge.
This isn't climatic Eric it has also gone on for years. The schools themselves recognise the problem. Apparently legislation was passed so as to take the responsibility for the supervision of PE refusers out of the teachers hands and it passes it over to the schools management. My pal said it was almost impossible to teach the subject as you had all these guys on the sidelines or whatever winding up the ones that were participating.
Yeah Chuck the televised game thing is certainly another huge factor in it. I find myself almost numbed by the amount of games on now.
Kids aren't any different these days. They still want to run about kicking a ball, just not in sub zero temperatures.
Ffs when I was at school we weren't allowed to refuse PE . Eric must have went to one them enlightened establishments where the kids pick the curriculum . It's a slippery slope I tells ye .
Are you serious that you didn't want to go outside for PE in the winter Eric? PE was my and every other bloke's favourite subject whether it was freezing cold and pishing down or not. I suppose us Prods are just tougher than your mob though.
