    Your support is fantastic

Everyone at the club would like to say thank you to the 2,300 Gasheads making the trip to Fratton Park tomorrow.

It has been a very difficult season, but your support has remained fantastic throughout.

Thank you for sticking by the team, and we hope we can reward you with three points tomorrow.

And it has been for years you only just noticed

GOALKEEPER Steve Mildenhall says the outpouring of frustration following defeat at the hands of Torquay United at the Memorial Stadium reminded the players how much Bristol Rovers means to the supporters.

Rovers were jeered off the pitch after losing 2-1 to Chris Hargreaves' bottom-of-the-table side last Saturday to slip within one point of the relegation zone.

Manager Darrell Clarke this week admitted that his team had got what they deserved in the aftermath of what was a disappointing performance, and Mildenhall, pictured, added: "The supporters showed their frustrations because they were quite rightly aggrieved at what had gone on.

"It is sometimes good for players to see and hear what fans are feeling deep down inside.

"They let us know exactly how they were feeling and that was understandable because it was bitterly disappointing.

"We knew a positive result would go a long way towards securing our safety, but, as has been the case on other occasions this season, we couldn't capitalise when we were on top of the game.

"Edginess and nerves then took over, but that is the past and we can't dwell on that now.

"We know that those same fans will be getting behind us again over the next four games and it is now up to us to do the things that keep them onside by giving them something to cheer about.

"These supporters have gone through some very dour times and we have to make sure that we keep this football club in the Football League for them."

Rovers continue their battle to beat the drop against an in-form Portsmouth side in front of 18,000 supporters at Fratton Park tomorrow, and Mildenhall said: "It will be a big crowd; possibly bigger than any of the lads have played in front of before.

"I've been there before and it is a great atmosphere and we know we'll have over 2,000 of our own people fully behind us.

"We'll need to get off to a good start and try to turn the crowd in our favour."

A home encounter against Rochdale follows on Monday before what could be a season-defining match against fellow relegation battlers Wycombe Wanderers next Saturday.

The campaign concludes with a match against Mansfield Town at the Memorial Stadium on May 3.

"It's the old cliche of four cup finals, but in these situations talk is cheap," said Mildenhall. "It's what we do on the pitch that counts. Everyone is upbeat and positive because our destiny is in our own hands.

"If we win our games then it doesn't matter what happens elsewhere.

"Whether you're fighting for promotion or battling to beat the drop you have to forget about other people and focus solely on what you have to do to get over the line.

"If I'm not confident and nobody else here is confident, we may as well just give up now and forget about the remaining four games.

"I remain optimistic and positive that we have enough in the changing room to achieve the results that we need.

"We need to get safe and once that job is done, we can step back and have a look as to why this season has gone wrong for us.

"That is something for others to do because for us, as players, we have to focus on trying to win four games.

"Not only are these four games massive in the context of the future of the football club, they are also massive for us as individuals if we want to be part of things going forward under the new manager."

MANAGER Darrell Clarke says that everybody associated with Bristol Rovers must forget about playing the blame game as they prepare to take the fight for survival on the road to Portsmouth on Saturday.

Clarke believes "four or five" points from the remaining four games of the season should be enough to finally ward off the threat of relegation and remains confident Rovers, who are one point above the drop zone, will do enough to retain Football League status.

They return to action for the first time since being booed off the pitch following last weekend's disappointing defeat at the hands of Torquay United, but Clarke said: "We have to put the shutters up and try to forget about what people are saying or what is going on outside of the changing room.

"Everybody will have their individual opinions on the situation the club is in, but none of this matters for the time being.

"There is no point looking in the past or playing the blame game at this moment in time because we are fighting for our lives and we have to make sure that we pull everything together in order to do this football club justice.

"We have a massive game at Portsmouth and that is all I am thinking about right now. It's the first of four cup finals for us between now and the end of the season and we have to go there determined to win the game.

"We will have to play a hell of a lot better than we did against Torquay last weekend, but it is not about looking in the past anymore.

"I know that regardless of what happened last weekend the fans will be getting right behind us again at Fratton Park on Saturday.

"Our destiny is still in our hands and we have to be up for that fight. We need our stronger characters to stay strong and the ones who have struggled need to step up to the plate and be really focused on what needs to be done.

"I'm determined to get this team over the line and we will get there. We have to keep believing. I'm not a half-empty person by nature and I believe that the players have the capacity to bounce back from what was a really bad performance last weekend."

Clarke, however, is not oblivious to the size of the task that awaits them against a Portsmouth side that he admits are "on the crest of a wave" after winning their last three games under recently-appointed manager Andy Awford.

"I know Andy very well," Clarke said. "He has been at that football club for most of his career and has worked with a lot of the first-team boys who have come through the academy.

"You can see that the fans are fully behind him and his appointment has served to lift the whole club.

"I think it is a great game for us, though. We will be taking 3,000 of our fans down there with us and if you can't be up for that sort of occasion then you should be doing something else.

"Some individuals will handle the pressure better than others and it is up to me to decide which ones are able to cope with it best.

"Formations, tactics and systems are of little consequence in these situations if you haven't got strong characters who believe they can pull us through."

Clarke, meanwhile, is hopeful that both Michael Smith and Danny Woodards will shake off minor injury problems to be available for the trip to Fratton Park.

Striker Chris Beardsley is struggling with an on-going knee complaint, but winger Fabian Broghammer, pictured, is in contention to return to the first-team squad for the first time this season since injuring his knee.

    Amongst the most important things that the players must bear in mind for the next four matches;

    1. Put in a full shift with a bit extra if possible.

    2. Don't let your extra effort result in red or yellow cards. We need you for all four games.

    3. Keep going all the way. DO NOT GIVE UP!!!!!!

All you need to know ahead of tomorrow's game

Opposition: Portsmouth currently sit in 16th place in League Two, five places and four points above Rovers. Despite getting close to the drop earlier in the season, they have won their last three games, to help pull away from danger

Opposition comments: Striker Michael Drennan told the Portsmouth News: "The confidence is flying and the win against Dagenham & Redbridge will carry us forward that bit more.

"The new gaffer has given us great belief and we keep winning because of it.

"If we win against Bristol Rovers I think we will be safe. The rest of our games will then be for next season.

"We need to push on because we can’t have any other slack performances like before. Every footballer wants to win every game. If you don’t want to win every game you shouldn’t be in football.

"It will be a good occasion, so it’s one we have to make sure we win."

Darrell Clarke’s Comments: “It is a massive game, there is no papering over the cracks. There are four cup finals, and this is the first one.

“We go into the game knowing where we need to be, we are not going to be in the bottom two, and there might be an opportunity to move up some places if we get the win we are looking for.

“It is in our hands, and we have to do a lot better than we did on Saturday.

“However, none of the past matters now, it is about pulling together and making sure we go out there and do this football club justice.”

Last Meeting: The last meeting between the two teams took place at the Mem back in December. Rovers won 2-0 thanks to goals from Ollie Clarke and David Clarkson. The last meeting at Fratton Park was in December 1992, and the home side won 4-1.

Team News: Danny Woodards and Michael Smith both missed training at the beginning of the week, while Chris Beardsley continues to struggle with a knee problem. Fabian Broghammer could be in contention after getting another 60 minutes under his belt in midweek

Listen Live: Unable to make the trip to Fratton Park tomorrow? Then you can follow all the action from 3pm as Bristol Rovers take on Portsmouth LIVE on Gas Player.

Betting: Rovers are 11/5 to take all three points tomorrow. You can get 9/1 on Kaid Mohamed to be the first goalscorer, or 20/1 on John Joe O'Toole to score in both halves.

First 20 minutes or so tomorrow vital. Even if we go behind if the team is showing
fight and getting stuck in the fans will be behind them.
But if there's a hint of dropped heads or half-hearted tackles 2,000 plus Rovers
fans who have travelled 120 miles on an Easter Saturday will not be happy.....
could turn against team/directors in a big way! Wouldn't like to bet which way it will go.
    I'm going.......will report back Sunday!

we dont normally win after going behind. so scoring the 1st goal is very crucial if the players want to be safe.
