Pompey will look to avoid being victims of an FA Cup upset when they face Altrincham at Fratton Park this weekend. Their opponents have enjoyed plenty of past giant-killings – most notably in the 1980s – and upset Barnsley four years ago. The Robins have already seen off Chester, Halesowen, Southport and York to reach this stage of the competition. And they head to the south coast on the back of an impressive 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions. That includes another victory at York in the FA Trophy and has seen them pull away from the National League North relegation zone. Phil Parkinson’s men currently occupy 15th position – seven points clear of the bottom two and six adrift of the play-off spots. It means there will be two in-form sides meeting on Saturday, with Pompey losing just one of their past 12 fixtures. Altrincham are currently 76 places below the Blues in the football pyramid, but will be hoping to make their cup pedigree count. TEAM NEWS Pompey have no new injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s win, while a fit-again Sean Raggett is back in contention. Ross McCrorie (hamstring) and Tom Naylor (hamstring) are both expected to return to full training next week. Jack Whatmough is not ready for selection after recovering from a serious knee problem, while Bryn Morris (groin) is still sidelined. Tom Peers was Altrincham’s hero in the last round, scoring the only goal of the game to secure progress at York. HEAD TO HEAD This will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs. TICKETS Pompey fans can secure seats by visiting the Anson Road ticket office. From 9am on Saturday, they can also be bought from the ticket office in Frogmore Road. OFFICIALS Referee: Tom Nield Assistants: Simon Shaw and Christopher Husband Fourth Official: Robert Desmond BETTING Pompey are the 1/5 favourites with Sky Bet to progress on the day, while the visitors can be backed at 12/1.
I was very wary of this tie, as like many Pompey fans, we have seen the club succumb to teams lower down in the Pyramid, Aldershot twice in my memory. My dream tie would be West Ham at home as the game would be about puré football and two sets of supporters who would have a good laugh and beer together.
Strange game after Tuesday night ! 2-1 victory with a 94th minute headed winner by Brett Pitman from a Marcus Harness corner headed on by Ellis Harrison. Terrible first half, slightly better second half. A lovely goal by Ben Close, followed by an Altrincham penalty to level matters. Attendance was 8,539, of which approx. 650 were extremely vociferous Altrincham fans.
