Why we MUST beat Accrington Good morning all Obviously we are all a bit pissed off that we couldn't take it to the last game. However there is the small matter of Accrington on Saturday. Wining is a MUST for this game. If we win and finish 3rd we will play Doncaster (hopefully not Peterborough, although it would be good to give them one back). The alternative is that we finish 4th or even 5th, meaning we play Sunderland (the law of averages suggests they'd do us this time) or Charlton, who did the double over us. A win would see us go into the playoffs in more confident mood - you have to avoid the spectre of third place - teams that are deflated at missing out on automatic promotion and then go and lose in the playoff semi-final. Older hands will recall 1993, when we missed out on promotion to the Premier League on Goals Scored (to West Ham) and finished about a thousand points ahead of 6th placed Leicester, who then dumped us out in the playoff semi-final. Although they 'don't have anything to play for' Accrington have some wind in their sails after thrashing Plymouth last week and they wont be turning up at Fratton Park just to make up the numbers. As for the play off final (should we get there), who would you rather we meet; Sunderland or Charlton. For myself, I'm not sure.
If we get to Wembley, then I would prefer Sunderland, who we have already beaten twice and drawn with once this season. Not Charlton who have beaten us twice this season, and who are a niggly team.
These playoffs are going to be tough whoever we play. Assuming (I know that's dangerous) we beat Accrington, we will be up against Doncaster or Peterborough. Our League results against Donny were 0-0 away and 1-1 at home - a repeat of which would see Donny winning on away goals. Our league results against Peterborough were a 2-1 win away and a 2-3 defeat at home - a repeat of which would see Peterborough win on away goals. Just saying.......
Omar Bogle could return as Portsmouth look to cement third spot in Sky Bet League One when they welcome Accrington to Fratton Park. Bogle was an unused substitute in the midweek defeat to Peterborough, who ended Pompey's hopes of automatic promotion, but the on-loan forward has been in training since Monday. Pompey remain without long-term absentee Jack Whatmough because of a knee injury. However, boss Kenny Jackett has an otherwise fully-fit squad from which to choose. Accrington will welcome back goalkeeper Dimitar Evtimov after suspension. Evtimov was sent off for the second time this season against Luton last month but has completed his two-match ban and is in line for a return between the posts. Defender Callum Johnson and midfielder Scott Brown have also been absent since the 3-0 loss to the Hatters and face late fitness tests to be involved on the south coast. Johnson is struggling with a knee injury while Brown has been suffering with a bad back. Opta stats Portsmouth have only lost one of their last seven games against Accrington in all competitions (W3 D3), a 1-0 loss on the road in September 2016. Accrington have failed to score in four of their five trips to Fratton Park in all competitions (W1 D1 L3), including each of the last three. Portsmouth lost for the first time in eight home league games in midweek against Peterborough (W4 D3). They last lost consecutive league games at Fratton Park in March 2018 (a run of three). Accrington Stanley have won three of their last four League One games (L1), as many as in their previous 19 (D5 L11). Sean McConville has been directly involved in six of Accrington's last nine League One goals (4 goals, 2 assists), including each of the last four.
Could be tricky this. The atmsophere will be flat and no doubt the play and if we go 1-0 down then I can imagine a lot of moaning and groaning. We need a goal fairly early on to settle nerves and get the fans involved. I'm going 2-1 Think Sunderland will desperately want to put one over us after the cup and the flare incident. Charlton are also on great form. Think I might fancy charlton at Wembley as they've not been there recently as opposed to Sunderland - and of cause us.

Pompey remain third in the table as things stand. They are now above Charlton only on goals scored, with the Londoners 3-0 up.

Great, the one team I was hoping to avoid. Still, if we're gonna play Sunderland, it's best to do it in the semi finals rather than in the final at Wembley where they will be super keyed up
Dull lifeless atmosphere today. Well taken goal immediately after the break by Sean McConville, which was matched by a nice 20 yard strike by Ben Close in the 59th minute. Accrington Stanley played well, but if Ben Close's superb shot in the 80th minute had gone in instead of hitting the bar, I think we would have gone on to win the game - perhaps unfairly ! Attendance was 18,439.
