Didn't even listen to it - got back late from work - so I cant comment on how we played or anything, but it's good that we bounced straight back from that bad defeat to get a win. Hope we get something out of the next game and dont just capitulate as we did against Scunthorpe
Judging from the comments on the news, there seems to be quite a bit of positivity really, although some people are more tempered in their response to last night's match. I can't really say much as I didn't see it and was just going on the BBC stats, but had Accrington got that 90th minute equaliser, the picture would have been far different.... At least we're on TV next so I can make a more informed opinion.
The first half was pretty poor but we picked the pace up in the second half. The goal came out of the blue after Jervis picked the ball up on the wing and started heading back towards our own goal before circling in letting fly with a speculative shot from just outside the area. I'm not sure that he hit it cleanly but it crept into the corner of the net under the diving goalkeeper. The win was most welcome and cheered me up after so many abject performances, but I feel it only papers over the cracks. There are still far too many long hoofs up the park and no one seems prepared to take charge of the game. Luckily for us Accy didn't have anyone like that either but Chesterfield will! For what it's worth my assessment of ;ast nights starting eleven is:- Carson - not a lot to do but was competent in what he did Shorey - not really tested but looked reasonable assured in his natural left back position Alfei - showed flashes going forward but looks lightweight in defence and caught out too often and would be punished by better opponents. great shot late on the their goalkeeper did well to tip onto the crossbar. Chorley - solid but a bit of a carthorse and distribution is limited to a hoof or header up the park Ngala - ditto, like two peas in a pod Diagouraga - powerful and gets about, not brilliant but does bring strength to the midfield Paddovani - had a nightmare game - gave the ball away too may times, either through poor positioning or control, wants too long on the ball, missed an open goal after the one really good move we put together Holmes - plenty of energy but not much else. He's definitely one who thinks he's better than he is Fogden - got about ok and put some decent passes in, looked the most likely to create chances from midfield Jervis - could do better. I think his size and style make him look lazy but he's another one who tries to be too fancy rather than doing the simple things. Found himself out on the flanks to often rather than in the box Drennan - man of the match. Lots of energy, stronger than he looks, gets up to headers even against taller opposition. This is all down to timing and his reading of the game, which is to be expected from a PL club player. Overall team - what team, they still look and act too much like 11 indivisuals rather than a team.
Yay Pompey! We need to get straight on the trombone to Villa and try and get Drennan till season's end.
mate i completely agree...........infact you writing this has saved 5 mins of my life Drennan was the best player on the park..........I was impressed with the power and strength of Diagouraga, we need some muscle in midfield and with Fogden starting to come into his own they work well...........still not sure on Jervis, but will take his goal as the 3 pts ultimately is what counts.
