From yesteryear - Earth Wind and Fire, the Isley Brothers, the Temptations, Van McCoy, Herbie Hancock, Grover Washington, Roy Ayers, Gil Scot Heron, Steely Dan, the Pasadenas. Still going - Peter White (acoustic guitarist), Los Ojos, Groove Armada, Beggar and Co (Victoria Park is one of the best sounds of 2012)
What kind of revolution Godders? Gone are the days of a strong left dominating scenes of protest not only in the UK but across Europe. I fear the European populace is moving steadily to the right. Witness the strength of far right parties in Austria, France, the Czech Republic and its growth in Holland. And on our own shores the increasing popularity of UKIP who may not be as nasty as some far right parties but make the Tories rather liberal by comparison. Even the Tories are shifting increasingly to the the right. Cameron needs to be strong to stand up to his hard core. In the last local elections in Fareham UKIP ran the Tories very close in one ward. So there may be a revolution coming but its not of the kind you would wish for. History has a funny knack of repeating itself.
There is just not the talent around any more like the 60's. Forget about Dylan, Beatles, stones that goes without saying. Its the rest that stand out, your John fogertys, Leon Russell , delany Bramlet John Sebastian, Carole king, brian wilson,Willie nelson, Robbie Robertson, guys who knew how to write a song. John fogerty's got more talent in his big toe than the Gallagher's put together. Then you've got all the black stuff, stax ,Motown ect .Man those cats from that era had it all, great music, chicks on tap, and now they've retired on final salary pensions with endowments that paid them a nice windfall. Us mugs that followed missed the boat, 10 years too late.
Who let these scummer music fanatics on our board? In order to stay on topic on a footy forum though, I will offer a rendition of this well known musical footy ditty.......................'He's only a poor little Scummer, his face all tattered and torn, he made me feel sick,so I hit him with a brick, and now he don't sing any more'
Back on topic, a young John Westwood with guitar rather than bell backs up Mr Cocker in the greatest rock and roll show on earth. The great Joe Cocker (before he went all soft), Carl Radle, Jim Keltner,Bobby Keys, Leon Rusell and other fantastic musicans. X factor-my arse. It's odd that you're so proud of hitting Saints fans with bricks. Wait, I don't mean odd, do I? I mean pathetic.
Crap song, always made me cringe when I heard that. Especially if we're not even playing Southampton.
Sad is the word I would use, anyone who thinks it's funny to sing about stuff like that needs to get some perspective into their sad life.
Herbie Hancock is an absolute genius. I've seen him perform with various groups on 6 occasions. Whilst I agree that "Headhunters" is a brilliant album (not just for "Chamaleon" which is the funkiest tune ever) but for the quality of REAL music that is going on. For me, Hancock is like Pat Metheny insofar that he has a popular appeal yet the music is frequently complicated, especially with regard to his use of harmony. I must admit that I love his playing most when he works with Wayne Shorter. He was also in an impressive quintet with Mike Brecker and Roy Hargorve that I saw about 8 years ago. I've got loads of CDs in ny collection either by Herbie or with him on piano. Curious to read some of the comments about bands on here. I love music and although my main interest is with jazz, I do listen to other types as well. Glasd someone put a call in for "Earth, wind and fire" as I thik this was a great band with proper musicians in it. For my money, too many pop groups aren't really doing it from a musical point if view. Every year I go to a jazz festival in France for my holidays and there are frequently more diverse bands that have cropped up. This year an incarnation of EW&F played and they were terrific. I would also have to say the same for Al Green. Othertimes, performers like Seal or Joe Crocker have cropped up and the music wasn'y very good to be honest. For me, the closer pop groups get towards jazz or employ improvisation, the better they generally are as you have to be pretty decent on your instrument to do this. I also like some "pop" acts like Kate Bush and Prince as well as listening to African music by the likes of Angelique Kidjo who is one of my favourite singers of all time. Other times I can listen to Classical music although this tends either be early music or 20th century composers like Messaien, Debussy, Ravel, Bartok, Janacek or Gavin Bryars. (Infamous for the "Portsmouth Sinfonia" many years ago.) I often have debates with my friends about whether the jazz produced today is as good as it was in say the 1960s. I think the answer is a definite "yes" but as with all generations and styles, there have always been commercial acts which are crap. This is not a new thing. Musicians like Ambrose Akinmusire, David Binney, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Gretchen Parlato and Esperanza Spalding might all be producing original music in 2012 but they are only the tip of an iceberg for what I feel is a really exciting time in music. That said, I can just as easily listen to music from earlier times and just this week I've been listening to records made in France in the late 1930's by the American trumpeter Bill Coleman as well as the blues duo of Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell - the latter producing the kind of effortless performances which are both classic and timeless. It's strange reading arguments about which decade is best when you listen to such a range of music. My advice is just to explore as to impose restrictions upon what you could discover. Cheers Ian Here's something funky for Pompey Moewth:-
I am just listening to the track, Ian - absolutely superb. Never really got into jazz, but that was brilliant
Cheers for that Ian, nice chops. I found this, if this doesn't get you into JF, Woops nothing will 1974 and it still sounds Funkadelic, but that's another story. Although it says Headhunters, the first track is actually Palm Grease, the first track off Thrust. Thrust line up too, Herbie, Bennie Maupin, (woodwind) Paul Jackson (bass) Mike Clark (drums) and the genius of percussion Bill Summers. If I had a spaceship powered by a Fender Rhodes, I would definitely blast off to this
Pompeymoewth Really enjoyed the Herbie clips. It's amazing that there is something as goos as that on film to record this group. I love the tune "Butterfly" and was pleased that the film included this. Youtube is really addictive and I am constantly staggered at what you can find on this site. I agree with you comments regarding Bill Summers. I saw him with the group he co-leads with Irving Mayfield, "Los hombres calientes, " several years ago and thought that they were terrific. My holiday destination each year is Vienne where there is a large jazz festival. Wondered whether you had ever checked out Medeski, Martin & Wood whose music is pretty similar to Herbie ? Here is a clip of them playing at Vienne in 2005 (don't know how I missed this gig although I saw them there in 2001 when I went the first time.) I've got loads of records by this band but think the "Radiolarians" volumes 2 and 3 are just about the best efforts they've produced. Once again, thanks for the links. Moving on from jazz .. What are people's opinions on the YouTube sensation Gangnam Style??
Here today, gone tomorrow. It's a fad that people will eventually tire of. Check out the competition, Tampa Bay Style. Tampnam Style?
That reminds me, I had a dream last night that I went to an American Football game at Wembley (I think it was) and the Seattle Seahawks were playing, and I was supporting them. Very random, maybe that's my subconscious telling me to get tickets to one of the NFL games at Wembley (and to support the Seahawks).
Been to Seattle Lapras - fantastic city. They have a Space Needle, where you can travel up to a viewing platform. The lift goes up a darn sight faster than the one at the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, I can tell you !!
Gay Bacon strips supports them Lapras, he will be so pleased. I was trying to convert you to the Bucs, the Seahawks might have a space needle, but who else actually has a full size Pirate Galleon in their stadium, complete with working cannons!?
Well, I have not decided on my allegiance yet so it could be Seattle, Tampa or even someone else maybe. Coincidentally they are showing a Seattle game on Channel 4 right now, could that, in combination with my dream last night, be a sign?
