Pepe Reine You're right. When Strachan went to Middlesbrough he bought players from Celtic and Rangers that both clubs were happy to sell. The likes of Boyd and McDonald scored in the SPL because they had players like Nakamura, Ki, Davis and Miller feeding them. No one is seriously suggesting that Celtic and Rangers, in their current financial situation, would compete with top EPL teams but given the money that teams like Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. get from SKY they would soon be up their competing.
Reminds me of the freezing night when I listened to Berkhamsted fans singing about "in Hitchin Slums". At least we're not on top of the M25, tisk!
The money we get from Sky while playing in the SPL is a fraction of what EPL teams get. Give us ã100m per year in TV revenue and we could afford to pay pampered, average players 100k per week just like half the EPL teams.
Celtic + Rangers probably have a bigger fan base than every English club bar Liverpool, Man United and possibly Arsenal. Had you benefited from the money everyone in the prem have benefitted from then who knows where you'd be, definitely challenging in the champions league at probably Spurs' level or something. The only thing I have to question is would your fanbase be as big if you weren't playing in such a league though, it seems as if a lot of your "fans" are people who choose between Rangers and Celtic as their second team. And I agree that they wouldn't compete with top PL teams, but in my opinion Celtic + Rangers would beat all the bottom half teams like Wolves, Wigan, Sunderland, West Brom, Birmingham, West Ham etc
im the new nigerian president if you give your bank account details ill be only to happy to forward 100,000,000.01 GBP to youre account within 48 working days
If Celtic and Rangers were in the Premier League they'd finish between 6th and 10th every year. There's no chance they'd go down. With their current squads, they'd probably be fighting relegation to be fair though.
OK, so I keep hearing. I think that lower table Premier League teams get around ã20m (correct me if wrong), what do the OF get? Rangers are in a bit of a predicament right now owing around ã20m in debt to LLoyds Banking Group PLC but pesumably celtic have got a spare ã20m per year to splash on players such as that bloke who used to play for Arsenal, etc, etc.
Pepe Reina Celtic have a huge fan base. That's why we're invited to play friendlies in the summer in the USA along with the likes of 'pool and Man Utd. We have a 60,000 stadium which could easily be upped if we did move to the EPL. I genuinely believe we would be up there competing with the big boys within a few years.
Scotland only has 2 teams right? No one gives a **** about the rest. They barely fill half the grounds when I see highlights on the TV. Scottish football gets too much TV time though. Most of the SPL teams wouldn't make it in League 1.
^^^ This. Aberdeen are one of the only other clubs I would consider letting join the English Leagues permanently, in the Championship, with the two SPL Edinburgh teams in the 3rd/4th tier. But then when you see AFC's results against the Old Firm, you think maybe not. 9-0, 4-1, 3-0, 4-0, 1-0 defeats against Celtic 3-2, 2-0, 1-0 defeats against Rangers 8 games - 0 wins - 0 draws - 8 defeats - 0 points - 3 goals scored - 27 goals conceded
I think even Wycombe could beat some of those teams in the Scottish Premier; certainly most in the lower divisions. I would also like to see a European/World Cup where the teams for each country are made up from those who play in league football within those countries. I wonder how many of the English team would be of English nationality.
Depends if lower League teams get entered. However, there'd be lots of trouble as everyone in Engurland hates Septic.
"Peterhead FC have been drawn away to Plymouth Argyle" But Seriously, it'd be good if it involved lower League teams.
