Yeah, because he should. Why do you feel that is unfair? I don't think it would help much with the protesters themselves, but it would at least reassure the rest of America to know the President-elect is at least appealing for calm. Outreach is a part of the job.

Because Trump appealing to an anti-Trump protest is only going to end up one way and that is to make things worse.

Oh look.....

So "repeal Obamacare" has fully morphed into "privatize Medicare" now:

During the campaign, coverage of the issues was blotted out by coverage of Hillary Clinton’s emails and Donald Trump’s broad suite of sociopathic tendencies. And of the issues that did receive any attention, a conspicuously missing one was Paul Ryan’s plan to push Medicare beneficiaries into private health insurance. Reporters just assumed that, since Trump never talked about it, it won’t happen. But Paul Ryan still wants it to happen. And in a Fox News interview with Bret Baier, Ryan said Medicare privatization is on.

“Your solution has always been to put things together, including entitlement reform,” says Baier, using Republican code for privatizing Medicare. Ryan replies, “If you’re going to repeal and replace Obamacare, you have to address those issues as well. … Medicare has got some serious issues because of Obamacare. So those things are part of our plan to replace Obamacare.”

Ryan tells Baier, “Because of Obamacare, Medicare is going broke.” This is false. In fact, it’s the complete opposite of the truth. The Medicare trust fund has been extended 11 years as a result of the passage of Obamacare, whose cost reforms have helped bring health care inflation to historic lows. It is also untrue that repealing Obamacare requires changing traditional Medicare. But Ryan clearly believes he needs to make this claim in order to sell his plan, or probably even to convince fellow Republicans to support it.

Could be wrong, but I don't think this will happen.

Ryan is an old-school fiscal hawk. Cut spending and privatize everything. I will say to his credit, he does understand budget issues very well, and he does not like deficits. I disagree with him on this and most things. But this is really just his fiscal conservative nature, he doesn't particularly have it out for old people or anything like that.

But, as hinted in that article he probably does not have support from other Republicans. You cannot touch Medicare or Social Security in this country or the elderly GOP base will go bonkers.

My one problem that I have with trump is how he handles the 11 million illegals, this could rip the country apart. for me he should draw a line in the sand and say if you were here beforeI became president then you can stay and become a citizen, if you arrived after you will be thrown out, if you commit a major crime upto 10 years after you become a citizen you will first be jailed, all your property becomes the states and then you get deported.
Hoping Trump can do a good job, doubt if at 75 he will run in 4 years time so he needs to crack on

You cannot deport a citizen of the US. The whole point of "citizen" is that the US is your country now. You can't kick someone out from the US to return to the US. You also cannot seize someone's private property for committing a crime. That would be unconstitutional. And politically, I think that even the most diehard Trump supporters would have a major problem with this. If there's one thing they hate more than illegal immigrants, its government ownership of land.

As for the rest, I don't know. The one problem Trump has is that his initial hardline stance on no amnesty is what got him here. But he also knows it is problematic. I don't think he is that much of a hardliner himself, but it always gets him a big round of applause from the audience so he rolled with it. He had that strange townhall meeting where he seemed to be taking a softer stance and even asked the audience what they wanted. Then he reversed again because some of his base were irate. Now he's just kind of avoiding the issue.

The reality is, that just like his wall, it's completely infeasible to get rid of all the undocumented aliens in the country. And most Americans and even many Trump voters realize this. They liked the "tough talk" more than they thought he would actually do it. But the insiders he has surrounded himself with, and his most hardcore supporters are nuts about this issue. He's in a bit of a pickle on that one.

Amnesty is absolutely off the table, I think. Especially if Kris Kobach remains in his team. How many people he actually ends up deporting is the question.

Republican president-elect Donald Trump has picked a member of an officially-designated religious right “hate group” to run domestic policy for his presidential transition.

Ken Blackwell, the former secretary of state of Ohio, and current senior fellow at the officially-designated anti-LGBT “hate group” Family Research Council, will be in charge of coming up with Trump’s “First 100 Days” of domestic policy.

Can't agree at all, I didn't see Hillary do any of the **** Trump did. I also don't see people of Hillary's side wanting gays to have therapy etc. I don't know how you can say both are the same.

If you dig deep they will be there. Bible bashing isn't the preserve of the right.

Just as on our left we have capitalists and on the right we have socialists. They may be in parties that say different but within each there are people that just don't fit the model. Do you really think Pence will have his way? I don't.

You realise in many states it is actually legal for parents to take their children to conversion centres right? Clinton wanted to make it illegal. But you know, both sides are the same...

I just don't get your political views at all.

I'm appalled at the result of USA election [just as I was appalled at the EU referendum result for similar repercussions] but I just have to hope that with responsibility, Trump and his underlings rein in their excesses. At this point there is almost nothing else that can be done. We've got 4 years, as far as the USA election goes, and then hopefully we can get back to a rational, tolerant society again. The EU result may have to stand until a younger generation reverse the referendum.

This guy. This guy is a piece of work.

They don't even mention the "80lb stock." In 2004 right near the election, Blackwell decided to suddenly enforce this rule that voter registration cards could only be accepted if they were printed on 80lb text. Which is really thick, stiff paper that is used for business cards. A lot of printers couldn't even print on it. Paper readers couldn't read it. No one uses this paper for normal transactions. So, pretty much every single voter registration form printed out by newspapers, voter registration groups, and even his own staff was suddenly invalid.

Why? Because it seemed like the Democrats were registering a lot of new voters that year.

Of course this was total BS and he was threatened with numerous lawsuits. So, he relented. After three weeks. Leaving the state with an impossible task of having only a few days for all of the registrations received or for anyone who needed to re-register to get processed and so thousands and thousands of people never got to vote. Mission accomplished.

Try reading this - to me, this says it all. Democracy cannot handle extremism ......

http://billmoyers.com/story/farewell-america/

What people seem to have forgotten since Trump got the nomination is the Clinton's tactics running up to the 2008 nomination. Bill had to be sidelined because he kept on coming out with racist remarks, Hillary had a go at trying to link Obama to Hamas and other muslim terror organisations. Hillary's team came up with the birther thing that has become an issue here for Trump. Many of Hillary's team were pulling the race card. Her team were also trying to complain that Blacks would vote for Obama just because he was black whereas this time round it is fine for the left to push the women must vote for a woman just because she is a woman line.

Democracy is fine. The establishment's ignorance is the problem because for so long they have gotten away with being able to do whatever they want and just "say the right things." They choose which angle to put on each news report. Instead of reporting they tell us what the interpretation of everything is. They choose when to conveniently forget about what people have said and vice versa can remember very quickly when it suits them.

They are going to have to come up with a new kind of politics because all the faux-liberal nonsense of zooming in on any possible interpretation of what anyone says is driving normal folks away from the left. People are sick of the Fear and hate politics which is coming from both sides. They are also sick of this "progressive" nonsense which is nothing of the sort. They use these terms to present themselves as making progress but they maintain the divides to keep their claims on the minorities.

People on here are going on about ill-educated or ill-informed when trying to explain the result of elections and are very quick to be annoyed by suggestions of "having enough of experts" or ignoring "stats and facts."

The problem there is that we have been bombarded by experts stats and facts that have been manipulated and massaged to support an end goal that has already been decided on. People remember the experts saying we are doomed without the euro. People remember the "weapons of mass destruction ready to fire at the UK within 45 minutes." It is no surprise when they don't believe.

And if you want to compare fascists to any body look no further than Corbyn and his anti-semite band. They have their own groups around them just like the democrats. UAF, Momentum, SWP and these groups are very good at mobilising rent-a-mobs or "professional protestors" into position.

The left in this country is very skilled at presentation in the media and the media are very happy to give them the platform. What you just saw in the UK referendum and then in the USA is a masterclass at taking that platform back. The media fell for it and gave all the airtime to Farage/Brexit and Trump starving the opposition of airtime and making them the story. Even Hillary went into this election thinking all she had to do was let Trump talk and she could take a back seat.

The last couple of days rallies tells you that far from believing the polls they knew it was much much closer than they thought and they upped their game and passion to try and get that momentum back but it was too late. Trump used a biased media to keep himself on the screen and his opponent off it.

Do you really think Pence will have his way? I don't.

Yes. Of course he will have his way. That's exactly why he was put on the ballot. Because Trump needed a steady hand, and to assuage the right wing Evangelical vote he needed.

That's how they did the whole campaign. Good cop, bad cop. Not sure if it was always intentional, though. Trump would say something kind of crazy and excessive, Pence would "clarify" and soften it up for the more mainstream or Evangelical conservatives.

I just don't get your political views at all.

The problem here is that while it may be completely wrong even in this country parents are allowed to choose what treatments they give to their children whether it be homeopathy or even as we have been seeing gender dysphoria and children that have reached puberty being offered hormone blockers.

The problem there is parental rights. Should the parent be allowed to choose any of these things whether it be blockers for dysphoria, medicines that don't do anything or "conversion centres."

Should certain religions be allowed to refuse blood transfusions that would save the patient etc.

It is a big can of worms to go into.

Do I agree with it? No. However what you are arguing there is to take away parental rights. In the same way as FGM would that change anything? We have only prosecuted 1 case of FGM despite the fact that they could and should have prosecuted thousands. They are tip toeing not to upset minorities and religions. These people who thing homosexuality can be cured are following their religious beliefs too.

We know what is right and what is wrong but if they tip toe around certain religions yet ride roughshod over christian beliefs that will make a much bigger problem.

There are a lot of things that religion makes it hard to move forward on.

My political views are quite different to my opinion on things. I might agree that something is wrong but that doesn't mean politically I think anything could be done about it.

so you do think Pence will get gay marriage repealed then?

so you do think Pence will get gay marriage repealed then?

He can't. Only the Supreme Court can.

He will undo the gay rights stuff that the Executive Branch has control over. Like anything that says Federal agencies can't discriminate against their gay employees. He will probably try to bring back "Don't ask, Don't tell" in the military.

Anything that he has an easy shot at, he'll do. Probably some medium-hard stuff as well. I don't know if he will go all out and try to ban gays in the military for example. He might. But he has a lot of other stuff on his plate, and banning abortions is job #1. He didn't go as hardline as the religious right wanted him to when he introduced RFRA in Indiana.

This article addressing whether Front National is left wing or right wing is very interesting. Of course if we look at what we think today they are left wing because they are socialist and socialists are supposedly left wing but worth a read. Turns out Corbyn is right wing and the free market Tories are left wing.

It would surprise me. That sort of thing would make the US look very backward to those in many other countries that are becoming more liberal all the time (meaning Tories and Labour are in reality pretty liberal.) Then again the money now is in countries that don't have forward looking policies.

I can;t see even the US reversing gay rights from where they are.

This won't even last a week once Trump takes office.
