"Peter Mandelson had lied repeatedly, declared a shocked Keir Starmer – adding, ‘Also, you'll never guess the Pope’s religion, or what woods-based activity all those bears get up to’."

Having a wife who still works in the brewing industry and being a former landlord myself, I would like to point out that actual profit per pint is around 12 - 20p. Duty is around 25%, overheads are generally around 30% and then there's wholesale costs to buy the beer
Government has quite a bit to do with why a pint is do expensive these days, but they're not solely to blame.
There's obviously some greed in the industry but labour costs, energy costs and property/rental costs have all gone up over the last few decades.
The latest generation don't drink like previous ones either imho - I know loads of young people who rarely drink so that's another problem for pubs that will need addressing as time goes on
No easy answer really but it's probably not the landlord getting fat on those prices.

Point taken, I am aware of the problems facing the hospitality sector which isn't restricted to the UK alone. Across Europe and elsewhere it's a declining industry for a number of reasons. My local brown bar and neighboring establishments in the Netherlands are facing financial difficulties, staffing is also a problem. It's an evolving industry, hopefully able to cope with the challenges in an uncertain world.

Not sure if this is the right place to post something about UK politics but I'm sure we can get back to Trump soon enough.
Maybe we need a separate UK politics thread but for some reason no-one seems to be too keen to continue the daily government bashing that we used to get.

I really do struggle to see how Starmer can get through this now. I don't doubt he was unaware of how close Mandelson and Epstein were but he appointed him US ambassador knowing they did know each other and Epstein was a complete ****. The vetting process for Mandelson was pathetic and not fit for purpose. And there's undoubtedly more documents still to be released that will put Mandelson in an even worse light.

Johnson managed to continue through heaps of scandals and remain in power so it isn't a foregone conclusion.
