As harsh as it sounds - they voted him in.

They also have the mechanism to get rid of him or just simply wait it out for either his demise (natural or assisted) or end of his term as he can't run again (and that's partly why I don't think he cares what he does).

What damage is done by then is anyone's guess though.

Hard to believe it has only been one year. Three more to go and who knows what the world will be like. His popularity is dropping but the elected class are completely scared of him and won’t do anything to upset him. Demise is the only possibility of him not going 4 years.

I don’t think so many people are leading those privileged lives anymore. Look around you; older people, like me, had privileged lives, cheap housing, well paid jobs, and are now looking forward to or enjoying generous pensions. Almost none of that is readily available to our children and grandchildren. Younger people are angry because they can see that privilege being taken away.
Of course there are.

There are lots of good jobs and as a former angry young person it just takes time to establish yourself, but there is ample opportunity out there. In my early 30s now and most of my cohort of friends from modest beginnings are home owners with good jobs and good lives.

Things may be tougher than the mid-90s - 2008 but I had significantly more opportunities available to me than people born to working class families did for much of the last century.

Things are just different, but overall life quality here is very high.

And in so doing destroy a military alliance which has lasted 75 years.

I am just wondering exactly how much damage Trump is doing. Carney has been in China to improve Canada's relationship. I am not sure how far China will go but it must send a message to Trump. I would find it ironic if the Chinese put missiles in Canada.

I would like to see Canada, Europe,China and Uk enforce a blockade of the Panama Canal for American shipping until the nonense with tarriffs is rescinded.

You want to ally with China against the US? really?

Oppose what Trump/MAGA is pushing I can agree with but allying with China is mad talk!

There's a vast difference between fostering good trade alliances with China and allowing China's military presence in your own country.
We already have pretty good trade alliances with China but Ian said we should join with them to blockade the Panama canal. lol.

What next? UK, Europe and Chinese subs in the atlantic to blow up US ships?

That's what my post implied - I have no issue with improved trade relations - I do have issue with a change of military "borders"

Exactly that. Our military allegiances lie with Europe and to an extent with the Commonwealth whilst complying international law. Until Trump and his regime are gone or hopefully rained in after the midterms the US can't be regarded as a reliable ally.

I’m a truly old fart brought up in a very poor neighbourhood. Free education, full employment, house prices that seemed attainable, and salaries that kept pace with inflation were the background to my twenties/thirties. Chuck in final salary pension schemes and triple lock and quite simply this generation of old gits have never had it so good. Now my grandchildren will be saddled with debt, underpaid and with no hope of home ownership. Privileged? Yes, I was. Living in a country with that centrist consensus (Attlee/Macmillan/Wilson/Heath) was OK.

Me too. Most of the blokes my age that I know all come from solid working class backgrounds. A lot of them are politically left wing and constantly shout tax the rich. I never seem to get a response to my comment that we are the rich. Government pensions from our jobs, triple locked pensions. When my wife and I qualified as teachers we were able to get a mortgage before our first day on the job. We were seen as a good risk because of being in a profession. You don’t have to be a millionaire to be rich.

I think a big factor is the concept of debt and it's impact - I have far more debt then my or my wife's parents do (even excluding the mortgage as they are in a council house or retirement place) and whilst i'm managing the payments it's a symptom of changes to my life in comparison to theirs (and changes I myself allowed to happen).

My wife's parents for example will buy a car for 1K and drive it until it dies (and over the years I've helped to keep them going far longer than they would have if a garage was pricing up the repairs) and then buy another one - though what you get for that price has gone downhill in recent years.

My wife and I don't see an issue on getting one on finance that we don't actually ever own as we'll not pay the final payment, give the car back to the dealer and start again on a new one...

this is the same across all things - it's not uncommon across my family's generations for the younger ones to have no issue using credit cards to buy thing now instead of saving for it and then spend more on those things because they can than their (great)grandparents do - the flip side is that they also have practically no savings so everything has to go on the cards and the older ones have saved.

I'd balk at spending 5K on a watch for example but one of my younger devs at work had 2 of them and both were financed.

Another conservative has gone to the the Reformed conservatives <laugh>

Left because of the handover of the Chagos Islands which is top of most voter's agenda. The Tories and Reform will rip themselves apart. Reform are importing troublemakers. So much for Farage saying they are different from the Tories.

I see that some Liberals are now calling for Davies to be replaced ! Political parties are trying to outdo football clubs !

Saw that yesterday, that would be a whole other level of idiocy.

Davey is literally their most successful leader in history when it comes to elections and he took them from 11 to 72 seats just 18 months ago.

They are also doing consistently well in local by elections so would expect them to do well in May again as well.

He is the only opposition leader who appears to ask Starmer any serious questions, rather than hyped up nonsense for social media clips.

Think some of them just want the sugar rush of a Lib Dem version of Polanski, but they should be very careful what they wish for
