The Conservatives will set out plans to "reward work" by giving young people a £5,000 tax rebate towards their first home when they get their first full-time job. So where are these houses going to be?
£5000 for your first home when you get your first job is like offering 50p off a brand new Ferrari when you claim Universal Credit.

£5k is actually a good chunk of a first time deposit, particularly with 5% mortgages becoming more accessible. Especially for those buying as a couple.
The issue with that policy is that cash handouts don't fix a broken system. It's simply papering over the cracks and as we have seen with other schemes that aim to improve buying power, it could be inflationary.
I don’t think the vast majority of people working their first jobs can afford a home in the current climate with £5k towards a mortgage.

As someone on a 5% deposit mortgage, the issue will then be that the monthly repayments are very high.
Luckily both Wife and myself are average earners, so between us we can cover it. But on your own I would wager you would need to be pushing £70-80k a year to afford our monthly repayments. This is for a 3 bed semi detached though, I suppose a single person may opt for a flat (leasehold is a nuisance) or a 2 bed house but the issue still stands to a point.
They don't need to use the money whilst in their first job. They get rebates of up to £5k put into a savings account of their choice whilst working their first job. So you save £5k over the course of your first job, which can then be used on a deposit (or whatever you choose). The issue isn't the amount being given, its that they aren't actually fixing a problem, they're simply throwing money at it.

I think we can all predict how Os would respond. He doesn't appear to be any more modest with regard to his assessments even though I think he is bearable when he sticks to football.
Well he can't because he's banned from this thread. So there really is no reason for the tone of your response - IOAG isn't banned and will likely just start a row with him instead.
I think the valium should have calmed IOAG by now. Happy to spar with him but genuinely no ill feelings towards him. I like his posts on the nature thread where I try to be friendly towards him.
The BBC article about the Conservative Party conference is fascinating. No one has turned up ! The halls are empty and the media is barely recovering to report the event.
It is amazing that it has come to this and I am not sure they can ever recover.
I just feel that if Labour get their act in gear, they will never get voted out of office. I still think people will suss Farage out before the next election and the press will go for him at some point. The next election is Labour's to lose.
