Its funny that all of this stuff is still so heavily controversial at the moment, because while i'm not sure we will ever rejoin the EU (although I dont think that is outright impossible either), I see rejoining the single market and customs union as basically a forgone conclusion in the long run, it is largely the elderly who are politically against it and drive the desire to keep out (I know not everyone over 70 is Tory/Reform and anti Europe, but they constitute the vast majority of that vote) and economically it is probably the easiest win for a future government there is, the instant that it stops being detrimental electorally it will happen.

Frankly if I was in Labour i'd be looking at the very low winning percentage of the vote and thinking 'would we actually lose any more over this?', but Starmer is more cautious than that I think.

Did I see a headline where 35% of youngish voters back Reform? And many of the England football flags seem to suggest quite a following for Reform amongst the ranks of England supporters. As for the elderly largely supporting Brexit, wasn't this the generation that voted in favour of remaining in the EU back in 1975?

The way to neutralise Reform, is to make real, significant improvements to people’s lives.

Of course there’ll always be some people who are taken in by divisive rhetoric, and the delusion that complex problems have simple solutions. But the less pressure people feel under due to the circumstances of their lives, the less susceptible they are to conmen like Farage (and Boris Johnson).
And give them less oxygen in which they can spout their claptrap!!!!

Will see what the voter breakdown from the election is when it comes out.

It is absolutely indisputable that Under 40's in 2016 were massively in favour of staying in the EU and over 60's were massively in favour of leaving.

There have been some interesting comments on this thread that I hae enjoyed readig. These are my opinions of the election result:-

1. I agree that some Tories including Sunak accepted thier fate with good grace. However, Liz Truss handled the result extemely poorly and it is good that she has been marginalised and hopefully will have little bearing ont eh plitical scene in the future. I feel the same about Rees Mogg.

2. Everyone was fed up with the Tories yet I sense that the whitewash result is not necessarily an endorsement of Keir Starmer who still had less numbers vote for his Labour Party as was the case when Jeremy was leader.

3. I am chuffed that Jeremey got re-eclected. He is the epitome of what a good MP should be. Shame he is not the Prime Minister.

4. As an Englishman, I was disappointed that the SNP lost so many seats. I think that this political party has been a significant player in promoting progressive values. They were effectively the principle opposition to Boris when Blackfor was in Westminster. It is a massive shame they did not retain their seats as it would have had no effect on the overall result and would have acted as a barometer to ensure that Starmer did not lurch too far to the centre. This is not a great result for democracy.

5. I am surprised people have voted for the Liberals as they seem to appeal to the immature. I do not think Labour did enough to present the case that , under Clegg, they sided with the Tories. They shouldnever be forgiven for this. In adition, I think Ed Davey is an idiot.

6. The Greens got as many seats as Reform yet did not receive a fraction of the coverage either during the campaign or after the result. I think they should have won more seats.

7. The fate of the Consersative Party. The loss of Penny Mordant is hugely crucial in my opinion. I felt that she was the best chance of restoring their fortunes if she became leader. I cannot see any other appointment having a positive effect in the long term. I hate to say it, but I agree with Farage in this respect. I think that Farage is right in stating that this is the end for the Conservatives. It will be interesting to see how a new leader performs as I can see some Conservative MPs defecting to Reform. With two parties on the Right competing to see who can be the most extreme, they both will alienate voters. I do not feel immigration will be an issue in future elections. The result yesterday is suggestive that the people what safe, centralist governments.

8. The treatment of Jess Phillips - I quite like this MP and find her engaging as a personality. However, she has a track record of hostility towards the Muslim community and was a vociferous critic of the parents who demonstrated for the removal of a school teacher who drew an image of the Prophet. She should have been brought in line back then. Although i think George Galloway is a publicity seaking moron, I do feel that the booing of Phillips was totally appropriate given the stance she has previously taken and Labour's overall position on Palestine. Starmer is rightly percevied as being hotile to the Muslim community yet has never been calle out for this. Say no to racism and Islamiphobia.

9. Starmer needs to act quickly to against Reform. It is a shame that he has been more robost against the more left wing members of his party and especially those who are Muslim. However, I see Reform as a major threat to democracy and they threaten to do in the UK what the NF have done in France. As a starter, GB News needs to be closed down. Farage and his ilk need to be challenged at every opportunity. I just feel that Starmer needs to be forensic in his criticism of Reform. The performance of the Reform MOs must be scrutinised and any short-falls brought to the attention of the constituents. I can see Reform ultimately being more important than than the Conservatives so this is something those on the Left must consider to be a priority.

The usual Thumwood hogwash. His appeasement of Muslims is baffling.

1. ✔ Not much there to argue with.
2. X Just for mentioning Corbyn yet again and referring to him as Jeremy like he's your mate.
3. X This one beggars belief. "The epitome of what a good MP should be" and "shame he not the PM" is a poor joke. His unsavoury involvement with terrorists has already been well covered but as some refuse to remove their blinkers it does no harm to repeat it.
This reports his IRA connections from an article published in 2017. https://www.cityam.com/jeremy-corbyn-cant-rewrite-his-reprehensible-ira-history/
And Hamas https://www.spiked-online.com/2024/05/27/the-myth-of-saint-corbyn/ The opinions may be biased but there are facts here that can't be disputed.
4. X The SNP have shown themselves to be a corrupt, inept government. Missing money, a general decline in living standards, health and education ( the last two Scotland once had a reputation for excellence) and independence put on the back burner has justifiably resulted in a public revolt.
5.✔ Agree. Lib Dems should be avoided at all costs. If voters want to tactically vote out the Tories that's fine but there are other options than the LD's.
6. X The worst thing the Greens did was to form a political party and not to continue as a pressure group concentrating on environmental issues. Once some of the nutjobs in their ranks realised they could use their elevated position to express other views the environment seems to come second. (See Scotland)
7. X IMO in this country there will always be a place for right of centre/right wing parties and immigration will always be an issue for many people regardless of the arguments for it. I've said before that in the UK talking a socialist mantra sounds good but only up to a point. Also in my opinion, the Tories would have been re elected if they were honest and half way competent as a government. The general population would prefer centre right politics.
8. X I don't know where to start on this drivel. I don't particularly like Jess Phillips but as I said above your appeasement of Muslims is baffling. They represent 6% of the population but are IMO, a serious threat to peaceful existence to non Muslims in this country. Particularly as their voices get louder. I will leave it there as any more criticism will no doubt be labelled as Islamophobia and shut down.
I don't usually pick up on spelling mistakes but just a suggestion, if you are going to call someone a moron you could at least spell the word next to moron correctly.
9. X "I see Reform as a major threat to democracy" but then goes on to suggest GB News should be shut down. So, democracy but only when it suits.

Anyone posting links to unsavoury misleading sites like cityam and spiked goes down two snakes.

You really do post some idiotic comments at times. I distinctly said that the opinions were biased but the facts can't be disputed because I knew that some airbrain would pick up on the sources rather than the subject. Yet despite that you have still picked up on the sources.
Can't you ever engage on a subject rather than the juvenile comments you regularly make to try to make yourself popular?

Especially as I am sure there are plenty of more legitimated sources on Corbyn’s links. Potentially even his own quotes. Never heard of cityam. Spiked seem all over the place. I’m sure they were started by disgruntled lefties but like most people who claim that they seem to veer to alt-right (or at least heavily platforming them) very quickly - Joe Rogan and the much smaller U.K. version (Triggernometry) as well as Russell Brand all spring to mind

Funny how that happens. But there is some kind of pattern as there were plenty out there who back in the day went from Labour to UKIP including one of my uncles. A political journey that only really makes sense if you have a very narrow political focus. Which I guess some do

I’m sure I heard something a while ago about how the Green Party was initially set up and funded by Tories to siphon Labour votes. I could believe it and it is what is now happening.

They are frankly ridiculous. They want a green energy proposal but disavow nuclear making it completely unviable. They are the biggest NIMBY’s in the country meaning either an even worse housing crisis or them having to be even more anti immigrant than anyone (eventually). Although they’d never say it

Combining extreme NIMBYism and left wing politics makes them the very definition of “Champagne socialists”. And winning a seat in Bristol doesn’t dispel that at all.

And then as you say - when given a platform they suddenly seem to care more about Gaza and LGBTQ issues (a very curious and overly simplistic cross over as I mentioned earlier) than actual green / climate issues

Lighten up as you recommend others do, Don't take yourself so seriously may be one of yours. Your snide denigrations on this and other posts shows your head is in a dark and musty place. Your bad day yesterday has left you bitter and twisted. The demonisation of Jezza is well documented and isn't something I'm going to return to on here.

The Jess Phillips stuff was disgusting. Anyone who says otherwise is a threat to democracy.
Mahmood said the same about harassment and hate. These are strong female characters (I disagree with their politics but they have had to work incredibly hard to achieve what they have done) and their treatment has been stomach churning.

The Muslim Labour MP in Blackburn who lost his seat to an independent lost because he had the nerve to criticise Hamas.

There is a major sectarian problem here.

We may argue about Israel, but I think it obvious that any force within the UK that objects to our values and seeks to impose religious nonsense on the rest of us is a problem.

There is an awful lot of sexism and homophobia in one particular religion of the UK.

100% agree. Also, literally everyone argues about Israel! :)

Well, it is a true puzzle - and not one anyone in the UK will solve!

Indeed. But it will only ever be solved by people who disagree talking it out and empathising with one another.

I thought Starmer’s press conference style approach today was very good. It does feel like there is some hope for the country.

I thought I didn't like him, but his speeches so far have been a real breath of fresh air.

There’s sexism and homophobia in most (all?) religions, but not every follower of these religions is fundamentalist in their obeyance of their religion

eg. We are Lady Parts, Muslim Comedy, not sexist or homophobic
