I'm not a Republican, or a particularly enthusiastic Monarchist either.

I think this is a bit of a PR **** up from the Royals actually. The majority of the population will probably be quite interested in the Coronation as a spectacle, whether or not they feel passionately about the Monarchy.

But to ask us all to pledge allegiance to the King personally... it'll go down well with a hardcore, but it will be negatively perceived and irritating to the majority I would have imagined.

Feels like its been devised by a Household sycophant who believes that the whole country feels the same as they do, when actually a more balanced touch is required, one that Charles in fairness had appeared to acknowledge up until this point imo.

Our media doesn't help them by being unchallenging because it gives them a false impression of what they should be doing to keep the public onside.

I think the invite to pledge has been offered, and in my case shredded and put straight in the metaphorical recycle bin - Charlie can go and get ****ed, along with the entire 'nobility' and anyone else who supports it

Is it true labour will put VAT on private school fees if they get in?

I’m not sure the logic of that, there are plenty of people whilst not poor are certainly not rich but make a commitment to better the education of their children.

If that is true, I was very likely to vote labour at the next GE, but that would 100% make me not.

Daily Fayell headline 27-11-2022: Fury over Starmer Class War on Private Schools. This more than a year after it was announced. Only cynical old gits like me would think it was linked to an attempt to demonised Starmer being part of the class war as tory support plummets.

Somewhat awkward for the arsewipe rag to have it pointed out that supporters of removing private schools’ charitable status include that left-wing class warrior, er, Michael Gove.

Writing in The Times in 2017, the leading Tory said: “Private school fees are VAT-exempt. That tax advantage allows the wealthiest in this country, indeed the very wealthiest in the globe, to buy a prestige service that secures their children a permanent positional edge in society at an effective 20 per cent discount.

“How can this be justified? I ask the question in genuine, honest inquiry. If Times readers can tell me why we should continue to provide such egregious state support to the already wealthy so that they might buy advantage for their own children, I would be fascinated.”

I think more votes would be gained than lost by removing charitable status from private schools

What utter nonsense. Private schools have been absuing their charitable status for generations.

The disparity in education children in the UK receive is a national disgrace.

To be in favour of the current system just illuminates the fact that you are happy with grotesque, systemic inequality so long as you are a beneficiary.

It goes deeper, I have a 10 yer old grand daughter living in Bucks. She was top of her class/year until she was 9. Now her family are advised that unless she gets private tutoring it is unlikely she will pass the eleven plus to gain entrance to the local grammar school..

I was going to vote tory but if that is what labour plan to do I shall switch and vote for them. I am sick to death of privileged entitled elites.

I asked a serious and honest Q and this is the response. Seriously you can all **** off after this, this is to do with my children’s education, who the **** do you think you are to lecture me. Go get a grip and a better paid job, that may be a start.

So there is now an issue with people sending their children to private school. Ffs

I may have missed it but you didn’t mention your children in your initial post. Your point was a fair one regardless - but in response to people not agreeing you have brought up new information that people didn’t know.

And are now swearing at people for not caring about the education of your children - who you didn’t initially mention.

As far as I can tell no one was judging you for something to do with your children as you only brought up working multiple jobs in the last posts where you used that as a reason for telling people to not bother replying. People aren’t mind readers

Now would one anecdotal story from you change people’s opinion - unlikely. Would it change the tone of the discourse slightly - maybe? Should that info be needed for a better tone? Probably not but this is the politics board and tone gets lost very rapidly

However, telling people - “just get a better job”. Now *that* is a tactless response. And let’s put it this way - not a response that you’d generally expect from someone who would entertain voting labour.

It would seem like the calculations here are that the pool of people who a 20% rise would tip into having to take their children out of private school / cancel plans to send them are small. As to how many more who are put off by this being anti aspirational - who knows. It obviously really sucks for any who fall in the former group. And certainly would be an understandable reason for any in that group to completely switch their intended vote to a party that isn’t going to implement such a policy
