I suppose the U.K. being out of the EU is just the carrot they have needed to encourage for independence, so from that perspective it serves them to avoid working with any other potential pro-EU party e.g. They basically threw the majority of their resources in 2019 behind unseating Jo Swinson, who was the leader of the party with the most pro-EU campaign, which is a good example of their intentions towards pro-EU unionist parties.
Ironically if Scotland wants to go independent it would be far better served supporting getting the whole U.K. back into the EU before going independent to prevent a hard border, end of movement and customs tariffs on GB, which would be an absolute nightmare for both.
But similar to the Brexiteers, they aren’t concerned about the damage that would cause for ordinary people, they are only concerned about the political statement first, consequences second.
I say that as someone who has a lot of sympathy with Scots over Brexit, but I think Scots Independence if it is to be, shouldn’t be rushed or it will just be the Brexit sequel and every bit as much of a failure.

Now I find it much easier to batter the Government over Brexit than Covid, although our government has undoubtedly handled this worse than anyone else in Western Europe.
But looking at the sodding newspapers today on the morning after it was confirmed ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND PEOPLE have died in 11 months is probably the most pathetic thing I have ever seen.
All sad pictures of Boris, trying to encourage sympathy. ‘Boris is so sorry, but we must also feel sorry for him, look how sad he looks’.
Even by their extremely low standards, this is absolutely ridiculous.
Now generally I’m averse to saying ‘but Corbyn’, but had he been in charge they would probably have been screaming for him to be summarily executed after this. No doubt they would be at pains to say the worst PM of all time and would probably question whether or not he murdered each person in their sleep with his bare hands.
Our ‘free press’ is a complete joke and an international embarrassment. No wonder this country is going down the toilet, with them continuing to grip some public opinion.

Thanks for posting that Badger. I will be delighted to vote that people such as Stanley Johnson are the first to vacate the country should there ever be a referendum on 'No Country For Racist Pigs'. What an absolute ignorant pig that man is. Who do these people think they are, and why anyone thinks it is necessary to allow him air time to make his views public is beyond me.
Don’t forget his sense of entitlement is shocking, last year when we had travel bans to Greece.....he decided to fly to Bulgaria then to Greece for a holiday.
His excuse was that it was essential to make the journey to make sure his holiday home was covid secure.

The guy is a vile piece of garbage who is responsible for fathering the worst PM this country has ever had and still continues to spout his racist views, even though he wants to become an immigrant to France. He gets both Covid vaccinations before NHS workers do (nothing to do with “contacts” of course), ignored lockdown rules (and got away with it) and yet people (probably because of the right wing media) seem to think he’s “alright”. He’s looking for “racial purity” and a reduction in the population. Where have we heard that before?

Never, ever, ever forget. Fascism is always there, waiting in the sidelines for the right conditions to prevail, and the time is right for scum like that to start spreading the word again. You only have to look at the 6MWE guys openly wearing their Camp Auschwitz tee shirts at the Capitol insurrection 3 weeks ago. The mere fact that someone like Johnson (and I’m obviously talking about the father here, but the son is going the same way) is allowed to speak filth like this without being locked up or denounced in Parliament shows how close it is.
I think the problem is that there is no mechanism to hold these people to account and they are protected by FPTP and the Commons from any reasonable human being making additions to the rule book.
Also hate speech is now defended under the guise of free speech, when I’m sure this didn’t used to be considered under the same banner.

Unfortunately Chilcs was correct but he did add “At a limit 20-25 million”, so we only need to purge the country of around 40-45 million (?).
I love how he forgets that he is from immigrant stock, when he argues for reducing immigration, and for reducing the number of children they have, when Bojo has 5/6/7 children, depending on who you believe.

It is strange how people who spout this kind of nonsense turn out to have been descended from immigrants. Boris Johnson was the subject of "Who do you think you are" many years ago and he ended up finding Muslim ancestors in Turkey. Nigel Farage not only has a French name but his ex-wives have ll been European too. Don't even get me o to the subject ot Priti Patel!!
I find the whole idea of "identity" really fascinating right the way through history. You start to appreciate just how superficial the whole concept is and that it is something that is almost entirely political with little basis on reality. Whenever I have been in France during the World Cup, it is incredible just how many "Frenchmen" are wearing shirts of teams such as Algeria, Portugal, Italy, etc. The issue is even more complicated when you go back in time because most countries did not exist in their current form. I am convinced that "national identity" is just another form of nostalgia even if it is for something that never really existed.
During the period after 1066 and mid 14th Century, England's identity was a lot more "French" with the people holding the land from the crown often having land in France too. Villages in Hampshire like Stoke Charity reflect this in their name - the second part being attributable to the fact that the Lord who held the land originated from La Charite in France. (I believe it is near Bourges.) In fact, I don't think people ever really felt "English" until the 1300s when you first encounter ideas of nationalism in writers such as William Langland in "Piers the ploughman."
The most interesting scenario with "identity" that staggers me is Celtic tribal names which continued to manifest themselves for several years after particular countries were vanquished by the Romans. You can see several funeral stele in the British Museum (although this phenomena is actually better demonstrated in the Roman museum in Lyon) where a person still identifies with a particular tribe" 200-300 years after they ceased to be a practical entity. Whenever I encounter this I wonder just how much of this is genuine and whether people adopted this identity without appreciating their origins or whether it was like an allegiance to a football team. It is especially surreal when you consider the genocide carried out by Julius Caesar in Gaul.
I love the questions these things pose. Although it fascinates me, if you contrast with the comments of Johnson senior and Farage, the parallels are not too difficult to draw. I just think these people are dangerous dreamers who have no grasp of reality and cannot accept the concept that the idea of national identity is flawed. Farage reminds me of Asterix but without the magic potion and as misguided as his Bard.
Boris needs to jump on this and make an example of him.
