What do we think of the chances of a Blair-type politician getting elected today. My gut feeling is that he/she would be elected in a heartbeat. We want a left of centre politician with Blair's communication skills and speed of thought. End of the present iteration of the Conservative Party, as politics would return to the centre, and Brexit would be waved away as a silly error which the UK will have overcome.

Personally, I would be slightly left politically of this left-of-centre politician, but I realise that people need to find support to be elected. Such a politician would do so, and I could handle the odd policy that I wouldn't agree with, against the very many I would support.

The theory is that he will send the letter but will separately negotiate to undermine the contents of it. Quite possibly threats to disrupt the EU will be the substance of it. The idea being that the EU may then refuse to extend and we fall out by default. There may be trouble ahead....

No thanks - I`d rather not have someone that commits British troops to a war based on fairy stories about weapons of mass destruction. A similar middle east conflict maybe brewing right now. Blair has blood on his hands, and he got away with it.

No, I didn't mean that at all. You took it far too literally. A Blair type. Not Blair with the errors. Read it again.

Footage of a delegation of Hungarian Foreign Minister and Ambassador leaving Cabinet Office today, at the same time as an emergency meeting of the Cabinet taking place. Maybe Boris has done a deal with them to veto the extension?

The thinking on this is that the Hungarians would have a lot to lose and very little to gain. Unless of course Pfeffel has offered their PM a couple of million into his private Swiss account. Not beyond the realms of possibility.
 
BBC TV News [watched on iPlayer] tonight has gone quite big on Trump's attempted collusion with other world leaders. He's trying to suggest he's routing out corruption, but he's brought his own underhanded business methods into the political arena where they are simply being exposed for what they are. Political corruption is a whole level higher in sophistication. Trump is clearly showing he's way out of his depth. Inevitably, it won't be long before he's gone. Will he last his first term? I doubt it very much, unless the corporate Democrats let him off the hook. Which they are well capable of, because they aren't exactly shiny either.
 
Notable that Hong Kong's increasing vigorous and violent demonstrations are pro-democracy orientated. Something to remember. Not only do people count, but people are what we're here for. If you haven't, you need to check out news of the protests.
 
Brexit Party barrister on Newsnight berating Pfeffel for his flexible attitude towards the law. It's reached a pretty pass when you are drawing criticism from that direction! I think that he needs to be quite careful now just how far he goes in that direction. It may be that for every percentage point he erodes their vote he drives an equal number into not voting or voting for another party. Worth bearing in mind that whilst Brexit is a very big game it's not the only one in town.
 
I'm being told by my in the know friends in Europe.....That the latest proposal from Boris has actually got some merit to it........I haven't looked at the details personally but is this the general feeling Is it a decent compromise............? They are also of the opinion he just might pull something out of the hat. How would you guys feel if he were to do that??

He won’t. It’s a completely unworkable proposal because it would mean Customs checks in Ireland, which is against the Good Friday Agreement.

I agree with Chilcs - it is in the EU interest also if yo think about it to say it is good as then they aren't seen as the blocker. I can't see him getting it through Parliament, so the EU are winners as they will say that they agreed with what Boris asked for
