Edmund Burke being ideal to apply to 2019?

I understand what you are saying but offering a choice to the people but only if they beat a number that you decided upon in order to not let their choice count is no better than simply keeping it in the house and ignoring what the public thinks.
The slender majority in the referendum, the lack of any majority in HoP and the current chaotic situation pretty well demands a substantial majority. Edmund Burke relevant? Yes, this in particular "Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgement; and he betrays instead of serving you if he sacrifices it to your opinion". Bleating "it's the will of the people" doesn't cut it for me.

Enough bollocks for today I'm off. Aarg toot aloos Jab

If we were to replace our FPTP voting system for a form of PR - and an excellent case can certainly be made for doing so - we’d actually see a lot more cases of fringe parties like the DUP holding the balance of power, as it’s unlikely any one party would ever hold a clear majority again.

However in Germany Merkel prefers to make alliances with political parties to the left of her, and to her credit will have nothing to do with AfD. It is something that the Tories should have done but ignored.

That's the ideal in any kind of PR/mixed system. Unfortunately, the two largest parties tend to be centre-left and centre-right, and loathe to work with one another; the large party won't want to cede authority to a primary rival, the smaller of the two won't wish to be seen as a junior partner.

Historically, it's been less of a problem in Germany, because only a handful of well-established parties ever actually won seats. The myriad minor parties never reached the vote threshold, so the coalition options were pretty limited: if the SPD won, it partnered with the Greens, if CDU/CSU won, it partnered with the FDP.

It's definitely to the credit of everyone involved that, in recent years, they've favoured the centrist grand coalition over involving the nutjobs...even if they sought every other conceivable (and unwieldy) option before acquiescing to it, heh.

Ah but they are in a Land of Make Believe

But soon you will find that there comes a time
For making your mind up

Don't let your indecision
Take you from behind
Trust your inner vision
Don't let others change your mind
And then you really gotta burn it up
And make another fly by night
Get a run for your money and take a chance
And it'll turn out right
And when you can see how it's gotta be
You're making your mind up

Who’d have thought it. Bucks Fizz in 1981 were like Nostradamus

Considering Cheryl Baker is a leaver and 3 of Bucks Fizz were going to headline the 3rd failed version of Leave.eu's concert rallye thing then even more so future seeing nostradamus's :)

I actually saw "Buck's Fizz" at an 80s weekend at Skeggy Butlins probably about 2000 (year.) Billed as Buck's Fizz before they lost a court battle to the one bloke who had continued to tour under the name when they left....and before the other bloke returned. They tour as "Fizz - formerly of Bucks Fizz."

And no I didn't go to see them. It was the Lincolnshire Pool open and after the last games of the night we would all be in the concert venues. Saw Go West, Laura Brannigan, 2 of Bucks Fizz, 2 of Bananarama, Neville Staples (Specials) and a few others I can't remember. Used to be a fun weekend even if you got knocked out the pool early.

When they formed an alliance with the Lib Dems, that was the death knell of the latter. I think the DUP have exercised far more leverage with the Tories than the naive Lib Dems ever did.

Done the Skegness Butlins a few times (mostly the Folk one). A good value fun time in my 'umble view. Most impressed by the really friendly, competent staff at all levels, especialy dealing with the occasional drunk person (no, not me) who got a bit silly.

The most unlikely Pub Quiz Question I now know the answer to

“Are the members of Bucks Fizz Leavers or Remainers?”

o_O

Arrests made for assault, assaulting a police officer and a few other things at the leave ‘demonstrations’ last night.

Over a million people out last week for the remain side, not a single arrest. Sums it up really...
