Honda decided they were leaving in 2011 when they knew they would end up with zero tariffs in Europe .........it was just a case of when, and that was this year.
Honda will always look after their motherland so if they need to keep the Japan plants busy other Genpos will lose orders to keep busy at home.
Nissan will be next.
Thanks for the clarity.

Thanks for the clarity.

No problem, spoke to senior manger the other week in a meeting and when asked "was it because of brexit etc" he replied it was always going to happen regardless of politics.
As he said the writing was on the wall when we dropped from producing 3 models down to 2 and shut our 2nd car plant, as soon as they knew about the zero tariffs the decision was made.

Side issue, I heard they denied Dyson producing their new cars in the spare capacity.

Not entirely true, he asked to use our test track and to use our research facilities........then went to the local press saying he wanted to build on site and was turned down.
Honda then said in the press that indeed Dyson was factually incorrect.

Thanks for that clarity too.
I thought it was rather strange that James Dyson said he couldn't build his cars at Honda Swindon and then went all the way to Singapore. Your explanation makes far more sense. He always intended to go to Singapore to make cars.

He also pays no tax to the uk government either out there, he's just trying to sound good in the press.

Oh yeah. I used to be quite a fan of the Dyson company, but their image is a little shabbier to me these days. I understand he wants to get innovations out quickly, but he says certain things and does different others.

He's very much about the money, the only reason he has his R&D facility here is because as its research not production he' has to pay very little tax.

And he's a Brexiteer too. Which I'm beginning to feel also stands for Tax Avoider, amongst the rich.
That’s the sole reason Brexit has become an issue. It wasn’t until the EU decided that they would bring out the Anti-Tax Avoidance Directive in 2014 that the campaign started in earnest. And they want it done this year, because, guess what, it becomes law this year.

I don't understand why governments are being so soft on tax avoidance amongst companies and not just the usual suspects such as Google and Amazon. The punishment of directors involved in this needs to be more severe and I would like to see more prosecutions. In fact, if certain companies did this on a significant scale over a course of time, I would like to se measures whereby these companies can be confiscated by the government. Throw the crooked directors in jail and let them rot. Lets put some employees on the boards too to have a degree of balance.

.

My argument here, as always, isn't about the Tories or Labour, it's about the extremism (both ways) of current arguments. Things are commented upon as if they must be either black or white. It's a major source of strife. Life / governments / football performances aren't perfect or abject. I do it occasionally if I lose focus but I try very hard not to fall into the trap.

So, so much this!!!

When the politics thread was introduced, this is why I didn’t want it and is why I don’t like politics. Every time there is a political debate, pitch forks get raised, lines get drawn and sides are formed. You very rarely see one side point out the good of another.

It’s the same everywhere in life.

This is exactly the point I wanted to make albeit done with more aplomb than I imagined.

BTW: I don't agree with Onionman's political opinion but he has argued the case well and I hope that he doesn't give up too, for what it is worth.

I’m not sure there’s a political opinion to disagree with, unless you refer to one specific point. He has a differing political opinion depending on the topic.

Sort of underlines his earlier point.

Absolutely no doubt, especially when you consider that they are in partnership with Renault who are approx 20% funded by the French government.... now way will any decisions favour the UK in coming years.

Prosecuted and jailed for something that's legal. I'm glad you're not my judge.

And a lot of sub-contractors are actually in the Philippines, with Singapore the front.

Yep. He used to use Malaysia until three years ago and the tax benefits ran out.... hence post above and introduction of Philippines... his CEO openly said it at a supplier day I attended.... in Malaysia!
