The Moggster issues grammar and writing style guidelines to his staff, including dropping all metric units. You really couldn’t make this up: https://www.itv.com/news/2019-07-26/itv-news-exclusive-jacob-rees-mogg-issues-style-guide-to-staff/
What is he going to do when someone uses a metric unit in a letter? Sack them? He will be taken to court for unfair dismissal, harassment, no doubt as I take it none of Mogg´s guidelines were negotiated.
Rees-Mong is apparently planning a career as a pop star appealing to ladies of a certain age ( and class) His first single release is to be "Party like it's 1899".
Who the heck does this Rees-Mogg think he is....if I was working for him I would tell him to go forth and multiply..........and then stuff it up his ass.......
I just thank all the electoral gods that I don’t live just over a mile to the north, because if I did he’d be my MP!
https://www.theguardian.com/educati...i93hm6E-nGGB4JW7KqLkpq3mfk#Echobox=1563967611 This is an interesting read, and is very apt for me as I went through the system because my father became a teacher at a prep school. And imo, it may well hinder the development of normal relationships because we lived in our own tight little world of going from the dormitory to breakfast, eaten in silence, and then onto a lesson. I did not experience going to school on the bus, learning how to engage with the opposite sex etc, etc. Still, I better be thankful for what I have as I could have been born without limbs as some were during that period in the UK´s history.
You must be about the same age as me Ides. I was born in the middle of the Phalidomide crisis, and my mum used to talk about waiting to give birth, and hearing about all these babies coming out of the womb with no arms or legs. We take so much for granted, thanks for reminding me to be grateful. Actually I consider mine (ours) to have been a charmed generation, but obviously not so for everyone.
I would really struggle being forced to use Imperial in government. I was taught both in school but as metric is pretty much superior in every way for anything involving maths so its what i would use for pretty much anything involving scale. And its the ****ing national government, everything's being done on a large scale. Not to mention that a large part of what the government is doing is dealing with Europe.... Who use metric.
I use a bit of both, especially when I'm buying timber. I automatically think of length in imperial terms, and thickness in metric so often find myself buying 8' of 45mm x 90mm. Equally, I don't actually know how heavy I am in kilos, but food measurements are always in metric. I switch between both on a daily basis, but will always admit that metric just makes more sense. I like to wind up my Wiltshire born wife by telling people that pre-decimal Currency was invented in Wiltshire, hence 12 pennies in a shilling etc so that they could count properly on their (extra) fingers.
I'm similar having dealt with both in engineering, online conversion a handy tool. Then throw in nautical miles when sailing, unfathomable sometimes.
I am similar. My height is in feet and inches, but if I am doing DIY I think in cm and mm. My weight is in stones & pounds, but all food measurements in grams. Sorry, to take this off topic. You know me - give me an inch and I will take the topic 2.54 centimetres off topic.
Born in 1953, Archers. You must be a late 50s or early 60s. Not sure if Phalidomide was even tested on animals but we all know the devastating consequences when given to pregnant mothers at the time. It just beggars belief how lax the authorities were in sanctioning drugs. It makes me question how brilliant drugs are today with a big question mark - what is the one given to men who have want to perform better? And what are the side effects of this medication?
That is strange as the forecasters all use Celsius unless they want to emphasise the extremes of temperature. So the UK is matching Mallorca. Here it is in the mid thirties at the hottest time of the day, and the intensity is there for longer.
Yeah, it is odd. I think it's a throw back to when weather forecasters still mainly used Fahrenheit when presenting the weather. Even then though I think they moved to Centigrade [Celcius] in the winter, so that people knew when it was freezing. Just an odd human thing. Perhaps we ought to move to Kelvin. Every country uses that.
