Projection still, but Le Pen has lost seats, her vote is down, and she will only have 1% advantage over Macron. The Express describes this as a HUGE victory for her. :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Confirmation from @guyverhofstadt that the ALDE group in the European Parliament will be joined by @EmmanuelMacron’s MEPs and others. The reform-driven group (of potentially around 100) will push for an EU that’s more ambitious on climate, tax and migration, he says.

Italy: EU28: The Green wave is about to roll over Matteo Salvini's ENF/EAPN group in our projection. The difference between the two has shrunk to only five seats (from 22 seats when exit polls started coming in earlier today).

The latest projection in France now that the polls have closed is that Le Pen will only have the same number of seats as Macron. Instead of a huge victory this is very poor when she expected to romp home. Looking at the figures it seems that the Greens have taken votes off her while Macrons vote has stayed steady.

Calm down please. This should be interesting as we see how Europe will change, and no matter what the UK will still have to cooperate with the EU

No, you seem to be particularly odd, you cannot accept anybody disagreeing with your narrow wish washy views.

I know things are not working out as you predicted SH, but try to keep on topic. Please ignore the deliberate attempts to rile you Yorkie.

  16. I sympathise with yorkie entirely but this is massive so you're right as always - let's discuss the next few hours like adults or ignore those who won't. This could be a huge moment - don't let others spoil it for you and other posters.

Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt has warned that his party will be committing "political suicide" if it tries to push through a no-deal Brexit.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme the move to no-deal would result in a general election, which could see Labour take power. Writing in the Telegraph Mr Hunt also warned the Conservatives would be "annihilated" and "face extinction" if there was a general election before Brexit happened. He says he has always believed that no-deal is better than no Brexit but warns that a prime minister advocating no-deal would risk losing a confidence vote in Parliament - so committing to a general election.

For once I agree with him as there are enough Tories prepared to bring down the government rather than see a no deal Brexit. I do note however that this is all about saving the party, not the country.

“The Tory party has doubled down on [exploiting] older people’s feelings about the modern world,” says Andrew Cooper, Conservative peer and co-founder of the polling and social research firm Populus. “The party has got itself on the wrong side of a huge values divide.” Across Britain, he says, people under 45 have an increasingly “open”, meaning liberal, worldview. This liberalism will not fade as they enter old age, he predicts – a shift on which conservatism has long relied – because it is largely pragmatic: a response to a more diverse and interdependent world.

Last year the Spectator magazine which usually supports the Tories called it the Zombie Party. Intellectually, the movement certainly seems barely alive. A sense of entropy hangs over the rightwing thinktanks that used to show conservative governments how to change society.

This may explain to some degree why the vote for remain parties was well ahead of the leave ones. If you can mobilise the younger voter to turn out then you can leave the older ones to remain at home and dream about the world as it was. Pragmatism has served the more successful leaders well, and to constantly be stuck with something from the past will not bring success in this constantly changing world.
