They campaigned for no Brexit at the last election and was thoroughly rejected by the electorate.

Pro-EU Conservative MP Ken Clarke says "it doesn't reflect well on Parliament that we are unable to get out of the deadlock."

"Whoever is elected, from whatever wing of the party he or she comes, will face exactly the same set of problems," he says.

"I'm not sure any of them [the leadership candidates] have any clear idea what their solution would be."

Of course he is right. The arithmetic of numbers will not change until after a General Election, something that would see the Tories wiped out as a government. It would probably return a coalition of parties who might strike a deal at least for a time to get out of the sorry mess the country is currently in. If a Brexit favouring PM came to power and tried to get out on WTO terms, the party would be split for ever, with many Tories saying they would leave. This is no longer about Brexit so much as power hungry ministers trying to get the top job.

No, this is simply following the UKs democratic decision to leave the EU under the best terms available. Interference by remain civil servants has spoilt the process. We need to reset the negotiations from a position of mutual interest whilst not allowing remainers to hijack the talks.

I think you are overlooking the fact that the EU have said there will be no new negotiations. Also remember that it was repeated time and time again that we would leave with a deal to our advantage. Leaving without a deal goes against that referendum promise.

It's not our fault! They're trying to negotiate the impossible. Can't expect to quit the golf club and then: not have to pay green fees to play; play anytime you want; not lose your parking spot; not lose the club professional discount; and then get upset when the committee put the club members / club interests ahead of your own.

    Not that difficult to understand.

The bully boys from the EU will negotiate when faced with a decent opposition. The referendum decision only promised to leave. If it is not possible to convince the EU on a deal that benefits all then we leave without a deal.

I wouldn't want you negotiating on behalf of me. Defeated before you start.

I seem to remember Farage telling us all how good it would be to have a deal similar to Norway or Switzerland. As he is your latest hero I can only assume that you agree with that. It was always on offer from the EU, but your totally incompetent party didn't want it. They wanted something more, and did indeed negotiate a deal with more. That is not enough said the right wing, we wish to create trouble within the party and get a different leader. This is all about internal Tory disputes that have been evident for decades, and seem to be irreconcilable. Time for them to make an honest split, instead of creating havoc with the everyday running of the country.

Three years ago before the referendum there was an article in the Telegraph with the headline,

The Conservative Party may be destroyed by this European madness.

It went on to describe how the party would be torn apart, and after it was all over the electorate would not trust them again. Clearly the Telegraph journalist had considerable foresight.

Not defeated, just no intention of defending the indefensible.

Your latest prediction will end up like the rest, quickly forgotten. The Tories will regroup under a new leader. There is no viable alternative for the forseeable future.

Are you pinning your hopes on the Change Party or the handful of wishy washies?

I am just an ordinary voter who doesn't write articles for the Torygraph. I would have thought you would have been far more interested in his view than mine.

  19. And unlike some parties they represent the views of all their voters

    #9919
  20. Yeah I'd be quite interested in that. I might even phone my solicitor.
Jeremy Warner, a hard Brexit supporting Telegraph journalist, wrote on 10 May "they'll get no thanks for it but the Civil Service has worked wonders on its no deal planning. Theresa May will have a bad legacy but she has left a pretty decent no deal plan in place". I guess some people know better....
