Totally agree. And, to make another point again - yet again - the Tories have had a reasonable i.e. working majority for HALF of the period since 1963. So all this twaddle about natural party of government, party most preferred by the electorate blah blah blah is exactly that - twaddle.

Separately, and you couldn't really make this up. We are forever being lectured about honouring the result of the referendum, (as if the leave vote was 100%, not a smidgen over half). However, our current governing party sees no irony or hypocrisy in shacking up with the DUP to govern and deliver Brexit (which the DUP seem to want fervently) in spite of the fact that NI voted pretty conclusively to stay in the EU. And it is assumed in our system that an elected MP represents ALL their constituents. Shurely shome mishtake !

How often do we hear that when referee is hardly noticed, he has had a good game. The ones who constantly get decisions wrong become the centre of attention, and quite rightly get it in the neck from the aggrieved parties.
Similar things could be said about our politicians. When they just get on with the job of running the country quietly, no one takes any notice of what they are doing, and people just go about their everyday lives. But some of the MPs want to be noticed and get promoted to high office, with a chance of getting to run the government, rather like a being a top ref at the World Cup. Some do achieve that ambition, but when they get there their incompetence is shown up for all to see.
At one time referees were part-time, doing other jobs to make a real living, but now they are paid a decent wage to concentrate on getting things right. Maybe it is time for our MPs to understand that running the country should be a full time job, and not something that they leave to others while they go about their main jobs. While we have Conference level Government ministers, as at present, trying to take charge of the biggest games, then they will be derided as totally incompetent, and leave the voters, as the fans, totally bemused as to how they ever got to be in charge.

  6. Not to mention that a big play during the election campaign was that Corbyn favoured fanatical religious groups with links to terrorism. I don't recall any suggestion that your money would be spent on the tories going into partnership with a bunch of nut jobs whose manifesto was pretty much the old testament with weekly bin collections....

I realise I've strayed into Brexit terrirory - well it permeates everything these days - but what a delicious outcome if Brexit resulted in a united Ireland. I mean the republic, not - as some completely mad (extreme) Brexiteers have actually suggested - the the Republic becomes part of UK again. Whilst I am utterly appalled at the barminess of people STILL wishing to leave the EU - a united Ireland might just about make it worth it.
PS I realise that 'completely mad' and 'extreme Brexiteer' are oxymorons (Accent on moron ?)

  9. It would be quite amusing to discover that all anyone who wanted a united Ireland had to do was keep voting for the Conservative and Unionist party<laugh> The interview with Paisley Jnr would be immense.

I've never heard anybody suggest the ROI should join the UK. I do think the EU's repeated attempts to prevent the Irish from offering multinationals very competitive corporation tax rates will eventually result in the Republic leaving the EU. Especially after the UK makes a great success out of Brexit.

So part of your script is low tax deals to the wealthiest companies while the working person shoulders the tax person?

  12. John Humphreys suggested it on the Today show. It didn't go down well.

This was purely a decision for the Irish government. They have benefitted hugely by attracting large companies, the tax take lowers the pressure on normal people. That is why EU members like France and Germany are jealous of the amount of inward investment the Irish have secured.

Wait till the fiscal control the Irish currently enjoy is taken away from them, they will be squealing like pigs.

  15. What's that got to do with suggesting that Ireland becomes part of the UK?

I repeat, I have never heard of anybody suggesting the ROI joins the UK, it is a stupid idea.

The sensible move is for the ROI to join the UK out of the EU, this will increasingly make financial sense.

How can you suggest this? 85% of the population say they are more than happy to stay in the EU. In view of the past history there is no chance that it would be sensible. You are clutching at straws again as the government falls apart.
