If I lived in France I would be more concerned with the problems in that country. There is ongoing civil unrest, a lurch to far right politics, high unemployment and the prospect of a recession. Even with the uncertainty over Brexit it makes the UK look like a picnic area.

I have worked it out. You are actually taking lessons from Grayling. Accept no responsibility for any mess that the government is in, but above all do not do detail. Cross party efforts going on to have him removed from office, but he should be safe seeing as the PM has full confidence in him. Transport is one of the vital things to keep the country afloat, but his record on everything he touches shows that he hasn't a clue.

More point-scoring and soundbites but no debating the questions raised.

The new cross-party movement which involves supporting May's deal then having a 2nd referendum over that deal or Remain is looking like the best way out of this mess. Rees-Mogg was suggesting this before the referendum.

It's a little bit long winded to quote in an argument Dan. The quotation comes from CND having been the only organization which has put together all the governmental white papers on the subject - other quotes leave out certain accessory details. The full breakdown is as follows:

Manufacturing four successor submarines = 31 Billion Pounds
Contingency Fund = 10 Billion Pounds
Missile extension programme = 350 Million Pounds
Replacement warheads = 4 Billion Pounds
Infrastructure capital costs = 4 Billion Pounds
In Service costs = 142 Billion Pounds
Conventional forces directly assigned to support Trident = 1 Billion
    Decommissioning costs = 13 Billion

    Total = 205 Billion.

You could get quite a few extra police on the beat for these sums. Also strange that so many people who talk about sovereignty don't raise an issue with such a development which cannot be used without American permission, and which will tie us to the US. strategic missile system until 2040.

I do not think that there is a necessary causal relationship between police presence and knife crime on the streets. Britain has a far more visible police presence, and also more video surveillance, than you would find in Germany. Generally I see, and hear, more police presence in Watford than I would in eg. Hamburg (which has the highest crime figures in Germany). For me the problem has a lot to do with the media - if people believe that there is a knife crime epidemic (ie. that everyone out there is armed) then there is more chance that they themselves will carry something for self protection - and, if weapons are out there, then they will be used. When was the last time that we were personally confronted by crime of any sort ? - maybe it makes up no more than 0.1% of our daily existence. Yet what percentage of media time is devoted to the subject ? I don't know this but I would suggest that it is vastly out of proportion. As a result of the media, we believe that life 'out there' is much more dangerous than it actually is - in reality most western cities were more dangerous 30-40 years ago, but we weren't so aware of it. The quality (or rather lack of it) of Britain's press has been shown up in stark relief during the whole Brexit process - most of Britain's newspapers are sensationalist comics, no more, no less.

Can you specific... who are you (not) calling a plonker...????

...and what exactly do you mean???

the meaning of hypocrite is quite clear...if not you can look it up....

Plonker however started out as a reference to someone who was forever drunk on cheap wine … which I am not sure does not fit the bill of anyone actually living in France

Given that all this was about your smearing French issues over a discussion about knife crime and policing that Frenchie raised after last nights events outside the Vic? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

It never ceases to amaze me how you resort to smearing, diversion, generalisations and eventually abuse when anyone calls you out on your posts...………….. maybe you should stand for Parliament

  11. Thanks Cologne - wasn't seeking to argue but was interested as that's not a figure I have seen before. I don't think there's going to be much difference at all in our views in this!

In December the economy shrank by 0.4%, the biggest fall since March 2016.

For the year the economy grew 1.4%, the slowest growth rate since 2012.

This shows that the economy is not as healthy as some try to make out.

You may be right... However there is an increase in knife crime associated with gangs and post code feuds.. And and this is the moot point innocent young people are getting targeted seemingly in error or because they are in area and justifiable targets....

Production fell by 0.5% in the month of December 2018, also driven by manufacturing, which contracted by 0.7%.

This is the sixth consecutive monthly fall for manufacturing, which last occurred between September 2008 and February 2009 and means that it is in recession.

But the most alarming feature of these numbers is that fact that business investment fell for the fourth quarter in a row. Think of how many companies that are in the UK and foreign owned. This is where the business investment comes from, and it is drying up very quickly.

Cuadrilla recently admitted commercial fracking in the UK is impossible under the government’s seismicity rules, after work was repeatedly paused at its existing Preston New Road site after triggering minor earthquakes. The government has said it has no plans to review the regulations. The government has also refused the same company permission to open a second site. Is this experiment coming to an end?
