It is really interesting in HE where generally the hard left run the Unions locally and the vast majority of academics whilst in the main being left of centre are more interested in their subjects and their rights to do their research etc.

Whenever we had our token one day strikes, the officials, generally, sociology lecturers or the like with little social nuance, would come into their own with their megaphones and hard left chants.

Yet when one of my departments courses closed, for all their bluff and bluster, the Union was totally useless, not even managing to turn up for the vital meeting.

I think it fits the stereotype....

I also think that most Labour MPs are to the right of the Labour voters - but by a much smaller margin than the membership. However - to be elected Labour need the support of people closer to the centre -people like me - I voted Labour under Blair because I believed he would not wreck the economy and I naturally feel slightly left of centre. Labour MPs understand that and realise it is the price of getting a Labour Party Government. Momentum bellieve only in their own policies and would prefer a Tory government to a centre left Labour one. What a shame. The Blairite centre are the only Labour Party that will govern. I oppose extremes of the right and of the left - unfortunately Momentum allow the Tories to get away with moving further right - and let the likes of the awful UKIP in. PArties in the middle CAN lose in all directions - but they GAIN in all directions too. THe country has shown time and again that it does not elect Foot, Benn even Kinnock - let alone Corbyn.
Don't blame the media for Corbyn being a rebel and not a leader - his entire life has been to rebel - he is clueless on building and leading a team of intellignet people - whcih most MPs are. Appealing to some of the rabble that make up Momentum is easy.
You are also correct - Labour have no decent potential leaders. Maybe Chuka Umunna or Hilary Benn - but I doubt if they would stand. Sadiq Khan in the future?
Corbyn will win and there will be some form of Labour split. The country will endure more Conservative policies.

The difference is the Conservatives unite to get power. Labour can do that but the hard left like Momentum do not compromise.
PR is not in this country so however correct you could be we have the first past the post system ans all voters know that.
What I do know is that those who support Momentum and Corbyn condemn this country to Conservative rule. I have no sympathy for people who voted Brexit if they encounter hardship going forward - it is what they voted for - and equally I have no sympathy for Corbyn or Momentum supporters as they are not willing to unseat the Tories.

We should be celebrating that the Tories are the natural party to govern the UK. By moving away from the Eton image and the forthcoming boundary changes it should ensure the UK is governed by a fiscally sensible party for at least the next 20 years. Comrade Corbyn should be knighted for his services to the country.

Theresa May is sounding a bit too middle of the road for my liking, hope we haven't got a bit of a leftie sneaking through the back door. The fat cats need protection.

Interesting post. The trouble with moving to the right to get in is that we shift the 'centre' to the right. Blair was a Tory in disguise. The most damning fact about his term in office - besides the illegal war that was entered into by him - is the fact that the gap between the rich and the poor grew. I expect that when greedy, immoral Tories are in power, but I will never accept it from a 'Labour' administration.

Sadiq Khan is a superb shout for future PM. As for Corbyn, he is a very reasonable, caring, intelligent man. Three qualities that evidently we as the electorate don't have, and probably don't deserve in a leader either. That's why we didn't elect the magnificent Foot, also too good for us (Kinnock would've been Blair, and Benn is the rebel you mistakenly, IMHO, describe Corbyn as).

George Osborne has paid the price for his ridicules scare stories, he made himself very unpopular with the victorious leave side and the party faithful.
