37 points has been enough on 9 occasions in the last 12 and 35 on 6 of them.I see no reason to suppose that this season will be any different. 36 points is my guess.

Good point Cruyff. Perhaps the 40 point mark is more a target for survival rather than the actual requirement.

I think the points total needed will depend on the top clubs. If enough of them play better this season as opposed to last season, then I think the points total needed might be only 36. But if the league evens up slightly and teams can nick points off the Chelseas and Tottenhams, then 40 will be necessary.

Yes I have come to the conclusion that this is the biggest factor.If you look at the Two Manchesters, Spurs,Arsenal,Chelsea and possibly the Scousers we only took six points off those six teams.There is no reason to think that this will change.that's why my guess is 36 for safety this year.
