Good Evening.
You may have seen reports of a somewhat bizarre conclusion to Brendan Rodgers’ press conference last night following Celtic’s wonderful 5-2 victory against Hapoel Beer Sheva.


The excellent @celticresearch account posted a transcript of one journalist’s attempts to get Rodgers to comment on Joey Barton’s latest round of nonsense. Barton had suggested that the Celtic manager might be having a mid-life crisis. You can find their transcript here.


However, I have seen a different account of events, which may be completely fictitious, but which now follows…


Journo: [*Chuckling as he speaks*] “Hello Brendan. Obviously no one is really bothered about the football. 5-2 blah blah blah, second leg to come, blah blah, keep it tight blah blah…”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*]


Journo: “So can I ask you about Joey Barton?”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*]


Journo: “He said some attention-seeking bullsh*t about you which is great easy page-filling material for us. Would you care to comment so we can fill the other sixty column inches that we still have left over? If you could say something rude about Joey that would be perfect”.


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*]


Journo: “He said you were having a mid-life crisis…”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently, and does not blink*]


Press pack: [*Shuffle uncomfortably in their seats*]


Journo: “Do you have any comment to make on that?”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. Picks up glass of water*]


Journo: [*Doubt creeping into his voice*] “Any comment at all?”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. The glass of water starts to boil in his hand*]


Journo: [*Panic setting in*] “Brendan? Mr Rodgers?”


Press pack: [*Stare at shoes. Silently pray that this will soon be over*]


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. The water evaporates. The glass starts to melt*]


Journo: [*Gulps*]


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. The melted glass drops on to the desk and forms the shape of a mini Brendan Rodgers kicking the arse of a journalist*]


Unidentified voice from amongst the press pack: “Dear God, let us get out of here alive…”


Journo: [*With squeaky voice*] “He also mentioned your tan and teeth…”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. Adjusts his tie*]


Press pack: [*Cower in their seats. Whimpering can be heard*]


Journo: “Do you think games like tonight’s take their toll on a manager? Might Joey Barton have a point?”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently. Puts his hand to his mouth and clears his throat*]


Press pack: [*Flinch with terror*]


Journo: “Mr Rodgers? Sir? My readers would like to know what you think. Is Barton playing mind games? Is that good for Scottish football? I need a line or I’ll have to make something up.”


Press pack: [*Sharp intakes of breath*]


Unidentified voice from amongst the press pack: “I just want to see my family again. Please make it stop.”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently, takes a deep breath*]


Press pack: [*Gasps*]


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*] “I thought the team were magnificent tonight. There is still a way to go before we are the finished article, but we have given ourselves a great chance to progress after the away leg.”


Press pack: [*Sighs of relief*]


Journo: [*Kneeling behind his chair and peeking out*] “And Barton? What about his comments? Did you see them?”


Press pack: [*Gasps*]


Brendan Rodgers: [*Nods almost imperceptibly at the journalist’s laptop which starts to whir and spark*] “No”.


Journo: [*With sheer unadulterated terror in his voice*]“It’s all a bit of banter though isn’t it?”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*] “Is it? Are you finished?”


Journo: “No.”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Stares intently*] “We’ll see about that. Goodnight everybody.”


Brendan Rodgers: [*Gets up and leaves. Stares intently into the soul of the journalist for the rest of his days*].


I am sure that all concerned have now learned their lesson…

"Aberdeen scorer Adam Rooney, reflecting on the Dons' 4-1 defeat by Celtic in Glasgow on Saturday, points out: "If you take the two goals late on out of it, it was a 2-1 game". (Daily Record)"

Yep, astute observation there ... and if you take just before the ref blew his whistle to start the kick-off, it was a 0-0 game or, indeed, if you take the 4 goals out of it that Celtic scored, Aberdeen actually won 1-0. ;-)

I've heard people/pundits say that the scoreline flattered Celtic, sure, if you only watched the 2nd half. The fact is it could have been 5 by half time and that would not have flattered us at all, it would have been an accurate reflection of the game to that point, but I guess there's a case of 1st half amnesia going around.

The Record Sportcolumnist has dismissed suggestions BT Sport chiefs have been told to “muzzle” him after crunch talks at Hampden. Representatives of the television broadcaster voluntarily met with SFA Head of Refereeing John Fleming last Friday to seek an amicable solution to the controversy involving whistler Craig Thomson.


BT chiefs sought an explanation for the withdrawal of co-operation from the ref after he started the second half of the St Johnstone v Celtic match early nine days ago. Thomson ignored normal practice to wait for a signal and the move is understood to have been in response to Sutton labelling him a “bottler” for failing to send off Rangers midfielder Harry Forrester at Dundee the previous weekend.


We understand the Hampden meeting was successful and the parties had reached a satisfactory agreement until reports yesterday claimed referees would continue with normal practice on the condition that commentators kept their remarks non-personal and relating only to football issues. But Sutton has been left bemused by such claims and refuted the reports.


He said: “Let me be absolutely clear. I have not been told anything of this nature by anyone and it has not been indicated to me that I will be spoken to about it in this manner in the future, either. “I have not been ‘muzzled’ as claimed. I gave an honest assessment of an incident as I have done in the past and I will continue to do so in the future. I’ll make no apologies for that – that’s my job.


“The one person who has been silent through the whole thing is Thomson. There have clearly been questions which have not been answered on why he took matters into his own hands.”

From what I hear refs are not obliged to cooperate with TV channels. Thompson checked this before he done it Current negotiations will put an end to this

Still, makes Thompson look like the archetypal Traffic Warden who wanted to be a cop, with an underlying Headmaster Complex and probable Penis Envy.... The last bit would go some way to explaining why he couldn't have just stood in the centre circle for 60 seconds scratching his baws before restarting the game, thus, never drawing all this attention to himself ... Oh, wait...

Police formed an armed guard after supporters invaded the pitch
Rangers say they are "shocked" at the charge issued to them by the Scottish FA compliance officer in relation to the Scottish Cup final.

A pitch invasion took place after Hibernian beat Rangers 3-2 on 21 May.

Rangers said the priorities are wrong.

"Instead of player and supporter safety, they have placed all their emphasis and importance on the monetary value of a set of goalposts, pieces of turf and advertising boards," said Rangers in astatement.

The clubs are alleged to have breached disciplinary rule 311, which states that "damage was sustained to Hampden... as a consequence of misbehaviour by supporters".

The compliance officer looked at the cup final incidents after the publication of Sheriff Principal Edward Bowen's independent report into the day's events.

The SFA requested the report following the pitch invasion that followed after the match. That report, published earlier this month, concluded that the Scottish government should consider making it a criminal offence to run on to a football pitch.

Fans entered the pitch at Hampden Park after Hibs won their first Scottish Cup in 114 years.

Thousands of Hibs fans jumped the barriers at the final whistle and a number of Rangers fans also came on to the pitch.

The pitch invasion delayed the presentation of the trophy and there was no lap of honour by Hibs players.

Rangers players were not able to pick up their cup final medals.

There has since been 64 arrests in connection to the cup final disorder.

Alleged rule breach in relation to Rangers
In that at the above match you failed to adhere to the Cup Competition Rules, specifically Rule 28 of the Rules of The Scottish Cup. That at the above match damage was sustained to Hampden Stadium, being the stadium where the Scottish Cup Final was played, as a consequence of misbehaviour by supporters of your Club. That the misbehaviour by your supporters occurred at the conclusion of the above match whereby, following on from a pitch incursion by supporters of Hibernian FC, a number of your supporters also carried out an incursion onto the pitch. That thereafter supporters of your Club who had engaged in the pitch incursion remained upon the pitch until cleared by Police Scotland and Stewards. That in the course of this misbehaviour by your supporters damage was sustained to the stadium, as follows: (i) To parts of the LED advertising system situated at the perimeter of the pitch, in the vicinity of the North Stand, and /or the West Stand; and/or (ii) To advertising hoardings situated at the perimeter of the pitch, in the vicinity of the West Stand.
"It is alarming that the governance of Scottish football is so lacking that it is impossible for the Scottish FA to guarantee the safety of footballers at the country's showpiece event," said Rangers.

"The SFA is either unwilling or is powerless when it comes to taking the appropriate punitive action against the offenders.

"A number of Rangers players were assaulted by Hibernian supporters in broad daylight on the Hampden surface and a repeat of this must be avoided at all costs. That should have been the priority of the SFA.

"Yet the governing body insists it is not within its remit to issue any charges, let alone punishments, for such violent and dangerous misconduct.

"Rangers directors will take time to consider an appropriate and more comprehensive response to redress our grievances, but for the moment the board fully endorses the incredulity and anger of all Rangers supporters."
