PROMINENT flag protest speaker Jamie Bryson was a mascot for the Northern Ireland football team just weeks before the start of the protests, it has emerged.
In a statement published in today’s Irish News, the Irish Football Association said Bryson - who chairs the Ulster People’s Forum - had been used as a last minute replacement for the normal mascot, who had taken ill ahead of the home match against Azerbaijan.
A spokesman for the IFA told the paper: “The regular mascot was unavailable for the game and his replacement took unwell... and Mr Bryson stood in at the last minute.
“This was a one off.
“Mr Bryson is not involved in any of the association’s community relations projects.”
Last week, Jamie Bryson revealed that the Ulster People’s Forum had opted for a new strategy of white lines protests, a move which was criticised by his Forum partner Willie Frazer.
In a webchat with the News Letter, last month, Jamie Bryson revealed that he had shaken hands with Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
