A few bits and pieces to round up from the bloodstock world.

Stallion News

A few retirements/confirmations of stud plans have been announced:

CAPE BLANCO, as many of us suspected, will retire to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud in 2012. A fee is yet to be announced.

DREAM AHEAD will go to Ballylinch Stud & LILBOURNE LAD will stand at Rathbarry Stud in 2012

SELKIRK will cover a restricted book of mares in 2012. The 23 year old stallion has suffered from declines in fertility in recent years so a decision has been taken to wind up the syndicate which owns him and allow him to live out his days at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket covering a small handful of mares.

Later this year, when the stats are published, I will put up a full list of all the foals by SEA THE STARS, so that we can drool/dream accordingly!

Also catalogued is a ¾ brother to last week’s October Book One 1.7million sale topper (Lot 979), as well as half-siblings to POWER (Lot 1013), ARAAFA (Lot 894) and TIE BLACK (Lot 905).

The catalogue can be viewed here: http://docs.tattersalls.com/cat/december/2011decfoals.pdf

I'm happy to answer any questions on the above either on this thread or over on "Ask PN"!

More stallion news today, with WOOTTON BASSETT looking likely to head to France to stand at Haras d'Etreham in Normandy.

I didn't see much point in starting a whole new thread for a few additional news items.

The coloured creature made 11,000 at Tattersalls last week. He was knocked down to Martin Percival of Boyce Bloodstock, bidding on behalf of owner/trainer Andrew Reid.

The Goffs November Foal Sale (15-17 November) catalogue is out. 6 foals by SEA THE STARS have been catalogued, most of them coming from Jim Bolger by the look of things!

Lot 581 - filly ex Finsceal Beo - dam 3 time G1 winner & half-sister to G2 winner FROZEN POWER
Lot 601 - colt ex Humilis - dam listed winner, full-sister to G2 placed STAGE CALL
Lot 627 - filly ex Luminaria - dam unraced half-sister to G1 placed LUMINATA & dam of G1 placed CUIS GHAIRE
Lot 685 - filly ex Scribonia - 3/4 sister in blood to G3 winner, G1 placed, CUIS GHAIRE
Lot 687 - filly ex Senora Galilei - dam full-sister to G1 winner TEOFILO
Lot 734 - colt ex Affianced - half-brother to dual G1 winner SOLDIER OF FORTUNE

The coloured thing certainly was a 'creature'. I couldn't imagine why anybody would want to pay 11,000 guineas for it but each to their own!

I'm told he was rather a nice looking individual, in that he was very correct confirmation wise and quite attractive. Probably best suited for a career in the show ring though!

He was over at the knee, with an upright shoulder, a straight hind leg, and a weedy weak neck, but apart from that he was lovely, especially his colour! <laugh>

Ah well, I'll make a note not to let the stud manager who told me that ever buy me a horse! Probably meant correct, for a TB!

I wouldn't have been recommending him as a potential purchase, unless that is you were particularly taken by his colour.

I think it has to be a worry when the yearling's main selling point is the colour of his coat!

I'm not sure what Lilbourne Lad has done to be worth retiring to stud. He has won just 3 of his 8 races. His biggest win was a G2, and he has come up short in G1 company:biggrin:

A cheapish, early 2yo type who is a son of Acclamation is very desirable to breeders. Plus i think Rathbarry are keen to take some of the pressure off Acclamation who is much in demand. I am sure that Princess can tell you more.

I agree that he wouldn't be my choice but there is clearly a market for his type, much like Zebedee last year.

Zebedee won 6 of his 7 races, winning his last 4. I know he only won G2s, but he still had a good race record. It just seems silly retiring 2yos in general to me. Surely people breed horse's for them to race. it seems that horse racing is just becoming a breeding business to owners

It does seem to be an increasing trend in recent years to retire a good 2yo colt to stud. I'm not a fan of it and think that in some cases (Holy Roman Emperor, Dark Angel, etc) the retirement is actually to cover up an injury.

Zenyatta is right that Rathbarry are keen to take some of the pressure off Acclamation, he has become more and more in demand in recent years, as evidenced by his storming success at this year's yearling sales, but there is still a great deal of doubt over whether his progeny train on.

Interesting that Dick Turpin is going to the National Stud. They need a replacement as Myboycharlie is being moved to France next year
