I've always felt there is something inherently wrong with the structure of the play-offs. Brighton, who achieved the same number of points as Boro over 46 games and missed out on promotion by 2 goals, are now facing elimination by Sheff Wed, who ended up with 15 points less than Brighton. Some system of weighting should be put in place taking the above into account. For example, Brighton should have started the play-off with a 2 goal advantage based on the narrow margin by which they just failed to gain automatic promotion. Sheff Wed are therefore given a chance. But not a wipe-the-slate equal chance.
That's the beauty of the play offs. Love them or hate them always great value and a brill end to the season.
In fact, I might go a step further and say there shouldn't be a Championship play-off this season, because Brighton were so close to second spot and sufficiently ahead of 4th, 5th and 6th. A clever mathematician should be able to write an algorithm for it.
That is just not football though, Brighton wont be the first team not to go up after finishing 3rd and being very close. It was in lace at the start of the season nd every team knew what would happen at the end.
I miss them like i miss Leeds and qpr......They are nothing but trouble with fans still in the 70's to match...
Sorry, I wasn't implying it could be introduced this season. Of course, it has to be set up at the beginning of the season. I think it's a bold but correct thing to do. I don't imagine it would ever be implemented though.
When they play away goals in European play , and after the two legs are complete they go into extral time . Now if they both score a goal in extra time , does the team that is on the road win because of that extra goal away ?
But they've spent different amounts of times playing on the road and home ... A third more to be exact Bit unfair !
That's why teams do like to play away in the second leg, that and knowing what you need to do whilst at home.
As it is the Championship play off final today, just thought some of you would like to remember this. Has to be the best day I have experienced as a swans fan. Emotions for those 90 mins were all over the place and was convinced we had won until we were in added on time. http://www.skysports.com/football/n...rom-sky-sports-vault-reading-2-4-swansea-2011
I was convinced we would win, when they hit the post and Monks block. If you then look at the game after that, they never troubled us.
That shot was in and then monks foot just appears I was sure they would score. but the swans being the swans never convinced until the final whistle, they make nothing easy for us.
Still my best day as a football fan by a country mile. I spoke to Rodgers and the team in Morgan's that night having bombed it back along the M4 with my mate - everyone was so euphoric. Dobbie was MOM for me and I told him so. Lovely fella. Dyer player of the season, and we had some pics with him but the lighting was wrong so you could only see his teeth! We mustn't forget Sinclair's vital contribution, but I remember he was much more aloof than the others. Williams was absolutely howling drunk. Wow. Seems like a long long time ago now. Hope Wednesday win today, but only because I can't stand Steve Bruce or Hull's ridiculous owner. Hull are probably favourites though?
The biggest game in the championship and the ref is the clown that is Bobby Madley, **** mine there is so much better out there for such an important game.
